Hostels-South America

From reading on here and other forums I notice people mention putting valuables in the hotel safe when you go out. Does this mean that most hostels in South America dont provide individual lockers where you can use you own lock? Im planning on bringing a pretty good camera with me and some other valuables, credit cards etc etc and I would much prefer to have my own locker...

Also do you generally have to book ahead or is it better to just turn up?

Most hostels down there have lockers. Cant think of any off the top of my head that didnt have any. Booking websites will usually say if they have or not.

I tended to book ahead, usually just the hostel for my next destination. That way when U arrive at the bus station/airport you can just hop in a taxi and get there without having to look around for a place to stay...

I remember quite a few that didn't have personal lockers. But just check on the website before you go.
