WHY do penalty points take so long to be activated??

I'll start off by explaining this is more of a rant than a question, but replys welcome!

I'm probably the only person in Ireland wishing to get penalty points. I got noticed driving above the speed limit back in November, the 20th. I got a letter out from the good people at the RSA to confirm this & to tell me that as of February 7th 2011 I'll have 2 points.

Now why aren't these points from November 20th 2010, as these last for 3 years I'll be stuck with them for an extra 4 months?!

And if it's an issue with being "under staffed" surely taking the time to sit down & write a letter saying I wont recieve said points until February would be better spent applying the points once I own up & pay the fine??

    Ahhhhhh......

you won't be stuck with them for extra 4 months.. 3 years is 3 years, you're not losing out.. as of the period between november and february, you're free of any points

Thanks but you've kinda missed my point. I know I dont have them for 4 extra months, I'm asking why aren't they activated on the day. So in Noverember 2013 I get a letter saying I'm points free, rather than February 2014...

Because after you pay your fine, one government dept needs to communicate with another, I'm sure theres a backlog that needs to be worked through :pac:

ok this is probably a silly question and before I ask id just like to state ive a full clean licence never had any points been on the road 10 year too :D. now for the silly bit, if you get points on your licence how do insurance companies know if you dont tell them as ive never been asked by any insurance company to see my license do they just trust that people with points will just tell them ?

How is that? Maybe I'm missing something but my insurance will be pushed up until 2014 instead of 2013....??? Any job I apply for I will have to disclose points to until 2014 instead of 2013....

If you've a company car they usually do a check, & they know exactly when you've been speeding, they get the fine in the post!

If you appeal them or nominate another driver after recieving the fine and points they would then have to go back and take the points off that were added in error. Plus if it took 3 or 4 months to sort it out all the way through and they were backdated to the offence, you would have gotten away with them for that 3 or 4 months because they wouldnt really have been added till it was sorted.

No there was no appeal, fine was received at 10am, cheque for the fine & my details were in the post by lunch time

Yes, but the option to appeal or nominate other drivers is there. I was talking generally rather than your case specifically.

Will you be ringing your insurance company in the morning to tell them about these new points? Or if your renewal was tomorrow would you get them to quote you wth the points added on?

Read the post before you reply next time. If it's a COPMPANY car, the COMPANY gets the fine in the post, because it's in their name.

saying "they" usually do a check.

Now how that is relevent to the asked question I don't know. You'd want to lose that attitude really too by the way ;)

Here's the kicker, don't tell them and pay the lower insurance bill but if your in an accident your insurance will be voided. In other words you have no cover.

Another point, why did they decide to leave the points on for three years. It's a very long time. Remember you've paid a fine also.
