Fiesta -- rear headrest jammed backwards!

I feel like a right fool...

I inadvertently replaced one of the rear headrests in my 00 Fiesta backwards.

Not a big deal, but it's visually annoying and interferes slightly with the parcel tray when the boot is open...

I've tried brute force, but the notch in the shaft (which would normally be released by the button) seems to be caught by something within the other socket.

    Any ideas? Tanks!

Other than applying some WD40 into both holes and gently rocking it back and forward until it's free I'm not sure buddy. Best of luck

Have you tried folding the rear backrest while trying to ease the headrest out? Might help to have someone else hold the button in while you wiggle the headrest.

It doesn't feel just jammed, it feels like the little notch has snicked into something. It actually felt as if I was trying to pull the headrest out without pushing the button in...

Thinking of trying to insert some sort of shim to try to release whatever is holding it...?

can you take the headrest out from the other side, and see what might be sticking?

don't forget to replace that headrest correctly

:) The notch on the shaft that would be released by the button seems to be caught by something in the other socket, which doesn't have a release button. This has to have happened before: answers.com has the same question -- no replies, though!

I reckon it'd involve taking the back off the seat, which is too much trouble for me...

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Did you see Bogger77's post (#5) above? A good idea, I think!

Thanks, lads! I did that. The headrest has two "prongs" (for want of the correct term). One of these has a series of notches to enable height adjustment, and a bigger notch to retain the headrest, which must be released by the button to remove the headrest.

Because I put it in backwards, the prong with the notches is now in the socket without the release button, and something in that socket seems to be catching those notches.

I can't see down the shaft well enough to make out what might be doing the catching.

Could you use something like a very thin long screwdriver to try to release the notches?

Yeah, or maybe a barbecue skewer. I'll have a root round and see. That's probably the best bet.
