Private motor tax on Toyota Hilux

Thinking of getting a 3 litre auto Hilux, but will have to tax it privately.

According to motortax.ie the rate, based on engine size is:

€1293 for engine sizes from 2901 - 3000cc. I believe that the Hilux 3 litre is actually 2982cc.

For post 2008 vehicles, emissions based, at 219g/kg the rate is €1050.

    Am I missing something here?

Has anyone got a Hilux or equivalent taxed privately, and if so what rate are you on?

    Thanks.

    Sounds about right to me.

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/motortaxinfotype.do

1293 euros is the private rate and 219Co2 its 1050 euros.

Tax system on private vehicles changed over to the Co2 system in june/july 2008.

Are you sure you cannot get it insured commercially? Or if you think the tax is still too high, just get a different crewcab as personally, i dont think the hiluxes arent even that good

Well as it stands, I do not meet the 3 employees rule for commercial taxation.

I like Toyota 4x4's and my alternative choice would be a Landcruiser, but I'd rather have a little bed space than the large boot of the Landy.

The Landcruiser however has an emission of 238 g/km putting it in the same punitive tax rate as a 6mpg Lambo or a Chieftain tank, with road tax of €2100 per annum !!!

In order to (legally) commercially tax a crewcab pickup (i.e. one with seating behind the driver) one must provide evidence of having a company with 3 or more employees.

One has to present PPS numbers of each of the employees. Furthermore the vehicle is meant to be used to transport these employees to and from jobsites etc.

This is to avoid abuse of the commercial road tax system.

I don't like him and his party but it's not new rules, they are just being enforced by the Revenue.

Plenty of ranting etc elsewhere on the subject (up to 65 pages on one thread on the Motors forum ) so can we keep this thread to solid info about the OPs query before we wander off in a similar way. Thanks :)

No You need to be the employer, not an employee.

OP from my reading of things what your saying is spot on for the tax rates.

As for the whole 3 employee thing I'm not so sure, there are ways around these things but you seem to want to do things to the letter of the law so your looking at over 1k a year tax.

I know this tread is a bit old now but im also interested in buying a hilux for private use but im certanly not interested in paying private motor tax (crazy money for our little bumpy roads).

Any one any ideas on what its like to buy and run a simular VEH but use it for private use? I should also add im employed (office work) if that helps.

    Thanks in advance!!

as far as i know you can not tax a commercial vehicle privately under the new emissions rates, has to be done under old rates on engine size.

For emissions I'd be checking the individual jeep, UK got the revised model years before we did.
With a Vigo, there probably isnt a cert of conformity so no means of measuring emissions = top tax rate.
