It looks like I am going to working in Spain for 18 months or so, if I take my car with me I may have to register it there after 6 months.

If I do that does my car get de-registered here? Or when I come back can I stick my Irish plates back on?

Your going to get two answers and I think you know what they are.

    1. The Boards.ie High Horse answer of what you should actually do in the eyes of the Church and Holy God.

    2. The actual answer of what 99% of Irish people that drive to the continent do.

Are you sure you read the OP's post properly?:)

@OP - When you register the car in Spain, the Spanish authorities will contact Shannon, who will deregister your car here. On your return to Ireland, you can reregister the car here on its old registration number without paying taxes. You might be liable for a small admin charge, but that's it.

99% of Irish/UK/French/Polish folk i've met living on the continent keep their car on their home plates until they get told they have to register :)

Of course the correct answer is register there if your staying longer than 6 months ;)

Presumably the OP will be able to reregister the car FOC in Spain on a transfer of residence? I can't see why they wouldn't do this - it's free, and it avoids any potential issues of legality/insurance.
