    hi,
i've taken a desktop from my bro-in-law who's machine is on its last legs. he got the blue screen of death with a registry-error on windows xp and there is no original cd. tried everything and evnetually got around to trying a mount via ubuntu 10.10 trial edition.

I'm now trying to see if i can just forget about windows use now and install a unix o.s. However i've now tried with two different live cd's (downloaded at low speed on to cd) and i keep getting errors on the install.

Is it necessary to be connected to internet during this install ?
or if anyone can suggest a linux o.s that oesnt need internet connection during install ?

I've happily installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a netbook without an internet connection during installation. IIRC it tries to find one, and offers to use one or set it up, but I could just say "no" and carry on. I suggest you try again, and be careful about which options you select when asked.
