has anyone come across this problem before. I am downloading files to my computer and what used to happen, was that they were on top of the date modified list. That no longer happens and they have a date modified of something like the 9th of September 2009 even though it was downloaded today.

Check that "Date & Time" in your System Preferences are correctly set and tick the box that's labelled "Set date and time automatically:" and select the correct time-server from the drop-down server list.

(I could of course be completely wrong and you've unintentionally changed the options in the "View" menu ...)

Does this happen with every file you download? Does it show the same date in each case? If so that would imply that there's a problem with your system date & time settings.

While OS X usually sets the "date created" of downloaded files as the download date, I've sometimes come across exceptions to this. I'm not sure why. If this is your downloads folder you should set it to organise by "date added".
