Just looking to pick your brains a bit here. 5 of us are planning to go skiing in Mayrhofen at the end of January and the best deal seems to be to stay in Hotel Alpina. It is getting great reviews, but is located outside the resort in schendau.

I was just wondering if anyone stayed there and what is it like in the terms of location. Is it too much hassle to get up the mountains from it, and what is the general area like for nightlife?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Im going there on sat-Cant wait.

From what ive read it seems like a quality resort but as always ill be making up my own opinion.Ive read terrible reports on resorts and when i got there found they were IMO the exact opposite.

Ill do a report when i get back but look online yourself and read what people have said about it but the proof is in pudding i find.

Just remember that no matter where you stay in Mayrhofen that there is only one gondola up to the Penken side from the centre of the village and it can get pretty busy there at peak times.

Its about 4kms from Schwendau to Mayrhofen so while not a massive distance I would check out that the ski bus stops right at the hotel. Also you would probably be having to get taxis in and out of m/hofen at night if you wanted to go out as the ski bus would stop early enough.

Mayrhofen night life is great. From the Ice bar at the bottom of the lift from about 3pm to the Schussel alm at 3am with scotties and a few other places inbetween. No shortage of nightlife in that town!!

    Great resort,

Que at the Penken is only really heavy between 10 and 10:30 so either go early or get the bus to Finkenberg and jump on the Gondola there and ski across.

Make sure you sot p at the pizza place beside the Vans Park! Great food with a super view of the park

If you haven't arranged rental Gear this is the man to contact super lad with great kit

Just to add there is also a gondola up the mountain(although not quite to the top of Penken) near to Schwendau called the Horbergbahn.

His shop is at the top of the Penken gondala so no lugging gear up and down wear your runners up store them in your boot space or just wear your boots.

His kit is all fantastic, Dad is out there this week skiing on 10/11 Salomon Enduro's and has changed them today for a pair of 10/11 24 hours as the snow is well packed.

Let me know if you need anything have tons of info on the resort

hi fattes i am really struggling to find a room (cheap)... need a room for one... other option is to just give the landlady in my mates pension some cash and sleep in their room which i don't mind... any numbers or contacts? has there been snow this week, last weather check i saw there was a 5-10cm each day for the next few which if it is true should improve things considerably!

^ try the tourist office http://www.mayrhofen.at/?L=1

We just turned up here one time and they sorted us out no bother. e mail them or give them a call.

Would be amazed if the Tourist office as above can not get you a bed

Has not snowed with any vigour since last week, Great think about mayrhofen the pisties keep it in great condition even working with nothing and the glacier is up the road.

I know it has started to snow in other resorts today.

Got back from Mayrhofen on Saturday.Thye just had a massive dump there which was well needed as it hadnt properly snowed in a couple of weeks.

Liked the place but as previously reported it gets WAAAAYYYYY too packed.TBH i found myself getting very annoyed on the slopes as alot of times i couldnt get a clear run to myself and get some speed together without constantly having to pass and stop for crowds of very slow skiiers.Even on the blacks it seemed that large crowds were constantly hogging the slopes. We went to Eggalm where we were advised the slopes woudl be less busy but even over there there was huge crowds.

Great palce but the crowds were just ridiculous for my liking.Queues for the gondola,Queues for the lifts and Queues for the lifts back down.

We even went to the bars after a day skiing and waited there for the crwods to get down on the Penken Gondola but after 2 hours the crowds were still massive.
All in all id be in no rush to get back

I'm off to Mayrhofen on the 5th and I'm disappointed to hear it was so busy.
It's obviously not school holiday season so that must be the normal scene.
I did read on this forum somewhere that it may be best to head to some of the outlying slopes early in the morning. Getting to the gondola early also seems important.
Davmol, was the gondola very busy all morning?

Im just back from Mayrhofen, had an excellent time.
The town itself is really nice, no bars showing english soccer all the time like some other towns.
The main gondola ( Penken ) was very busy at the end of the day when everyone was finishing at the same time. But if you have a drink or two u'll be fine.
I would recommend you go over to the aHorn, the white lounge ( igloos ) are over there, you can have a drink & relax in there and have a nice long run to Mayrhofen.
Would definately go back to Mayrhofen & would only say that about certain places i.e. Val Thorens & Kitzbuhel

Loads of places to rent gear & very cheap too, €50 for 6 days skies or snowboard ( just on the main street you can miss them )
Found accommodation on tiscover.com ( worked out about €35 a night, no food though )
Penken gondola is right in the middle of the town, if you cant see it your drinking too much Vodka Feige :-) enjoy

A friend of mine stayed in the Elizabeth Hotel in Mayerhofen - several times - and loved every minute. She said it was fantastic in every way.
Have a good time wherever you stay!

    Hi,
I'm going to book ski's and lessons for next weekend in Mayrhofen. Fattes mentioned a company in Mayrhofen so i'm going to book with them.
Can anyone recommend a ski school for a few hours of private lessons? The place we're booking the ski's have a link to a ski school but it's in Zell im Zillertal.

But it is Austrian and they will all be very similar

Don't know if I'm too late replying but we used http://www.mayrhofen3000.at/, skischule mayrhofen 3000. We got a deal from Luggi ski rental, €199 for 5 day lessons and 6 day rental of good gear. http://www.rentski.info/uk/Welcome.html also meant to say my mate returned his helmet after day 1 as he didn't like skiing with it and he got a full refund on it without even asking!

Had an amazing week there, would def recommend it and probably will go back soon as it would be hard to top. Good mix of good skiing, food and apres ski! Snow was good enough, sun shone all week so it started to get icy at the very end. Temps were climbing by the weekend and the forecast was not great for snow or even snow cannons as it is too warm, so this week could be a much different week...

I'll do a proper review in the review thread but a few points... The Gondola wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. About 15 mins to the top and only way into the town home. As long as you are there before 9.15am queues are not an issue, well not last week anyway. There is a gear store at the top and the bottom of the gondola which is €10 for the week or so so if you are not living close by might be worth the few €.

Ahorn is worth a look. relaxed up there and igloos are cool.it is a good home run, but not much else to ski there to warrant doing more than once... Didn't do Hintertux Glacier as it was a 45 min bus journey but if I was going back, which I may well, would plan it better to go the the other resorts which are connect by bus. there is about 200km of slopes connect to mayrhofen and a further 300+km in various other resorts which are all covered by the super pass at 199 for 6 days.

Any questions i'll try answer them...

i went to mayrhofen last year and skied the hintertux glacier - luggi in the ski shop told us only to go over on a clear day, which we did and it was amazing. best days skiing i've ever done!

    hope you tried the harakiri:D

HariKari has got to be one of the most over rated slopes in Europe and a credit to the marketing guys!!! Much better to drop of the side of it and ski through the avalanche barriers!!

The Devils run (17) is a much moor challenging and demanding slope than the hari-kari.

Top of Tux Glacier is amazing! you can see mountains in 4 nations from the top of the viewing platform

That may be so but for someone who's only slightly above intermediate standard it's quite a challenge!

The amount of people stopped at the top of the steepest part was awful though:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,859 ✭✭✭glanman

Ya that is the one disappointment that I have is that we did not go to Hintertux... we choose to do classes (decent intermediates) the whole time to make sure we got up each morning no matter what happened the night before and its good way to know where to go...

Harakiri was of interest but going up on the lift and seeing practically everyone slide 500 yards on their arses was not! again should have done it but have got over it!
