    Hi all
Got a few problems with my brothers 2003 passat tdi,
He was in the States and car lay up for about 12 weeks without being started…
Any we got it going yesterday and found that the wipers were not working at all, I checked the fuse box located near drivers door and all seems ok.. would the bad freezing weather have damaged something as was working perfectly before..

Also its got the climatronic system but when the heater is put on full its will only blow cool to luke warm air but no hot air at all…(this has been like this for some time he says) someone mentioned it could be the plastic fins etc on waterpump that are broken... and I checked the 2 rubber pipes going into the car and both are warm…

    Any advice appreciated

    thanks

    hi

got the wipers fixed , the linkage was seized on it

went to the garage about the no heat in car and he thinks it may be the waterpump but wasnt sure..

does anyone know if the waterpump is damaged would the 2 pipes going into the car be warm?

    thanks

What makes them think it's the water pump? Is the car over heating or loosing fluid?

I'd say it's more likely the thermostat. Was there enough anti-freeze in the car to cope with the low temperatures?

no car not overheating or no coolant loss,(plenty of antifreeze) he says the plastic fins on the waterpump tend to break off and can cause no heat but would the these 2 pipes going into car but getting hot if that did happen(he didnt know)..

if thermostat was gone would a light not appear on the dash

No there'd be no warning light for a thermostat (no that I know of)

correct me if im wrong but I'm sure thermostats fail open leading to overcooling, thats why the engine isn't actually properly heating causing luke warm air.

In rare cases they can stick closed instead of open. To be honest I would rather mine was stuck closed than open. Would make me replace it.

    HI lads

Just replaced waterpump on tdi passat last week . Heater was blowing cold air .But car was also overheating propeller had come detached .
Heater rad could be semi blocked or climate control system faulty flaps behind dash not opening prop .

ok if the waterpump propeller came off surely the 2 pipes going into the heater matrix would not warm up and remain cold...
i took these 2 pipes off and blew air into them several times in the hope of flushing out all the crap but not much in there at all... but still only cold to lukwarm air coming ..
do i need to let the air out of the system when i do this?

    thanks

It defo sounds like circulation issue . even if thermo constant open if car reaches runnimg temp you should still have something a bit better then luke warm air . As regards air in system general rule is fill with coolant/water leave cap off expansion bottle for few minutes and it will bleed itself . When car is at running temp heater hoses should be same to
feel as main rad hoses , if they are problem inside car . If not prob outside
Ie waterpump / thermostat / main rad blockage / But id have taught you would have had overheating issues aswel

no overheating, temp gauge stays at 12 o clock position so normal..all hoses seem to get warm
however there is a slight gurrling noise inside when i switch on the heat on

All sounds good outside . heater rad blockage or there is motors under dash board that control opening and closing of flaps relating to climate
control system . diagnostic test of the HVAC system on car would determine if any of these motors are faulty
