Question on building a house?

    Hello,
I am not sure if there is a forum for people interested in buying a house or building a house but I couldn't find it - so forgive me if i posted this in the wrong area.

We are Irish but living in the US and looking to build a house in our home area of Galway. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to go about this.
As we are doing it from far away - using a builder seems the way to go as opposed to hiring each part individually such as a brick layer, plumber, carpentry etc.
I gave a call to a builder and he quoted me anywhere from 70 euro a square foot - this doesn't include finishing work. I thought this was high considering what's going on in the country.

I'd appreciate any thoughts / advice on this.

    Thanks you.
    D

You need an architect. He/she will look after the design, liase with the planning authorities, find the right builder and make sure the house is built to the right specs.

I lived in Africa and did exactly what you are thinking off. It wouldn't have been possible any other way.

There are loads of good construction people with time on their hands at the minute. If you could source a person you know in ireland or an unemployed relative to project manage and liase with you during the process, you'd save a fortune in the building of the house as well as creating a paid job for someone.

So that should be no problem to have someone manage it.
Saying that I take it it's best to hire each division seperateley - brick layer, plumbling, carpenter etc?

    Thanks!
