    Hi all,

A thread to share what people know about new phone releases for 2011. :)

So what do people know about any new Android phones scheduled to be released this year......!

HTC recently released the Z and HD versions of the desire which are lovely phones but Im sure if we bought one there'd be something new released the following day :) Even the standard Desire is still going strong nearly a year after it was released and Samsung Galaxy S is another great phone to thats still going strong.

Also wondering will Googles new "Nexus S" be getting released here?

Dual cores are on the way.

    LG Optimus 2X

    Motorola Atrix

Dual cores are on the way.

    LG Optimus 2X

    Motorola Atrix

Nice on both counts although I'd wonder will the 1500mAh battery in the LG be decent enough for a dual core processor and the extras that would run on such a beastie - the 1930mAh in the Moto should be pretty sweet though!

I'd be interested in people's opinions as someone who is in the market for a smart phone this year.

I'm currently using a crappy old ready to throw nokia, but am waiting for the right smart phone to buy to replace it (and have been for a few months). I was going to go for the HTC desire, until I heard about dual core coming. Here's my question:
Is it worth having a punt on one of these first dual core phones, or should I wait until HTC bring one out?
How long would that wait be? I know they haven't announced any dual cores in america even, so if I have to wait past summer I'm out.
I like the desire (my friend has one), and I don't trust motorola or LG on too produce a good enough phone to compete with what samsung or HTC could do, based on the smartphones I've already seen.

What do people think? Are the first dual cores set to be fantastic, or is it a matter of waiting for the right one to come out?

There's a new Samsung in the pipeline with a Dual-Core thats set to be announced in feb/march. Could be worth checking out.

By all accounts the new Moto is getting great reviews from the small amount of time the tech bloggers have spent with it. I have a feeling it could be my next phone, been a HTC man with the hero and desire but the atrix is tempting me!!

My birthday is in March, so could be nice to get it around then...

Any idea what the name of it will be so I can watch out for it?

I reckon my best course of action is to wait for the samsung one and see how the reviews compare once both are on the market. Might save myself a few quid if I end up going for the Moto then.

There is never really a safe time to buy any high end tech product as something better is always around the corner and doubly so for phones. Im guessing more dual core phones will be announced towards the end of Q1 2011 and by then reviews of the Atrix and X2 will be out at least.

One thing to consider is the Motorola Atrix may not even hit these shores (Droid series didn't) and also the level of control the manufacturers use on the phones OS can make a huge difference in which phone to choose.

Screw dual core, yes faster is always nicer but my current desire is hardly slow. We need better battery life.

I'd agree with you there, I mean my main concern with a phone (aside from does it call and text) is whether it'll function well as an music player. The dual core motorola has a better battery than most, apparently.

I don't mind that a better model is around the corner, the reason I want the latest one though is cos the Desire is a year+ old, and I'm not someone who buys a phone every year. If I'm dropping a lot of cash I'd prefer to get a dual core, which is more likely to perform at the top end for longer, rather than get a HTC and it already be a year old. I'm planning to use this thing for years, like until they come up with star trek style teleporters to eradicate the need for phones. And even still I'd wait a while.

I like the 16 gigs of space on the Motorola. It's set to come out in the UK I think, so that would indicate more of a chance of getting it here. (or maybe that's the LG dual core I'm thinking of).

Will the dual core phones definitely use a lot more battery? Thought I read that they will use less power doing the same tasks as a single core as it requires a lot more power to run a single core at 100% than 2 at 50% (I'm sure I'm simplifying this, but you get the drift) This is obviously negated if your playing flash all the time or heavy gaming.

Does the amount of RAM affect the battery life, Atrix has a whopping 1GB

I think the galaxy s really got to be a well known phone in the last few months of 2010 so no pressure on its dual core successor, going to be announced next month apparently

Hopefully too, toward the end of this year we'll see all smartphones gaining AMOLED as the supply shortages end

ah you dont get it. Dual core will bring in better battery life as well as performance. Its not gonna be running two cores at full speed all the time unless your playing hd games.

EDIT: Its gonna bring better power management and distribution. FOR ie. Running two cores at low speeds rather than one at full

Either way we would be lucky to get any of them phones seeing as the LG and Motorola smartphone division hasnt been present in this country for years now

Concur with the guys that have said that dual core brings better battery life, not worse.

Yes RAM is a major killer of battery life... And yes you're right about 2 being better than one:D
