Three: Configuring to allow incoming connections.

    Hi All :)

Does anyone know if it is possible to run a server over 3 mobile broadband?

I've set up an account with no-ip to ensure a static ip address but I can't access my server from another external computer.

I've tried to access it through VNC but also had no luck.

Somebody told me recently that three block all incoming connections except those required to answer a previous outgoing request.

If ths is the case anyone know how to get around this?

I bought a Sapido hotspot/router that allows me to share my connection (myself and the wifey :D) but I think this will cause problems when connecting to the server as the modem will have a different ip address to the router.

Any and all help would be appreciated as this is wreacking my head :(

    Thanks

Post split to it's own thread as it doesn't pertain to Mifi.

No, and you'd be absolutely crazy to even try it.

    Thanks Watty,

Much appreciated, Unfortunatly I live in the boonies and asdl is a non-option:(

Mobile's all I got to play with so I gotta do the best I can with what I've got.
I travel a lot and just need to be able to store and retieve files where ever I happen to be.

    So call me crazy :D

I know you want to be able to do this, but the simple answer is that you can't. It's not going to work with Three anyway. Some sort of online storage, that you can access from anywhere, would be a better solution.

I have Three modem with dovado router and there is no problem to do VNC, just use APN 3internet.

I must confess I'm not expert when it comes to configuring port forwarding and network stuff. Know the theory, never had much experiance in the practice though. Hardware and software is more my thing

I used the 3internet APN on my router then tried to vnc from my girlfirends laptop to my machine without any luck at all. She's on O2, crap service provider not that 3 are all that brilliant or anything

Did a bit of googleing and the great Google God in the Net said to configure port forwarding so I gave that a try but that flopped as well. That could be down to pure stupidity on my part I must confess

Could you tell me if you configured port forwarding on your router?

At least if it's possible the port isn't blocked.

I could use file storage I suppose as jor el suggests but I would like to log on to my machine at home from abroad, it would be nice to have the option.

Thanks to you all for all the help and advice by the way, it is much appreciated. :)

What kind of router you have?
It could be also firewall on your windows blocking the incoming connection when you trying to login.
You have to forward the VNC port number, as default is 5900, The best option is to make static IP for PC with VNC server not to go via DHCP because it can change IP as is assigned dynamically.

I bought a Sapido GR1102 on Ebay, Great little thing, all Linux based but I expect most routers are :)

I've it set up to connect every time the connection drops.
I kept getting a different ip address everytime the connection drops so I set up a NO-IP address and entered that address into the Router (it has a page for it) to try to maintain a static IP address. Is there another way to keep a static ip address?

One of the many thing that confuses me it is which IP address to enter into the VNC client. The modem is on 10.x.x.x, my machine is on 192.168.x.x, my girlfriends computer is also on the 198.162 network. I know the 192.168.x.x is an internal address but it's the connection from outside to one of these machines that confuses me. How do I get to one from work if hers has a VNC server and mine has a VNC server.

At this stage the network gurus are rolling their eyes at me and saying "what a moron" ;)

I'll post a few piccies from the router later (at work now) to clarify the mess I've made of things, they may help.

Again, thanks for taking the time to help :)

    "what a moron" wink.gif

No not really, I'd apply that more to posters that say you are absolutely crazy to even try it, because you'll never learn much if you just give up.

Your problem is that 3 will issue you a new IP address everytime your dongle disconects and reconects and as you have a 10.xxx.xxx.xxx address from 3 it will never work ;)

You have private IP address from 3 (the 10.xxx.xxx.xxx one) because you are using the 3ireland.ie APN you need to get yourself a Public IP address by changing the APN to 3internet.

Then with port fowarding you should be able to connect to the Public IP address 3 have given you from outside your network with VNC....... with luck :D:D:D

You'll still have the issue of the IP address changing on the disconects but ingnore that for now and just try to get VNC connecting even if its temporarily just to prove it works and is worth perservering with.

On the port forwarding side you want to port forward to the IP of your girlfriends PC so thats the IP you want to keep as a fixed IP, often easiest thing to do is give the IP address via DHCP (on the router) a massively long lease, that might be simpler than using a fixed IP, Gateway and DNS on the PC.
