Of those 3 I would pick the Focus.

I would discount the Golf as overpriced and troublesome with age.

Try and get the best spec Focus you can for your money as base ones are pretty spartan.

Heres a nice Ghia in the UK...

Well someones got to to suggest it... an Octavia TDI! :D:D

Personally, if you want nice looking car, relatively new compared to the BMW you will get in that bracket with a good engine, its got to be an Alfa 159 2.4 JTDm (or the 2.0 if you have to save that little bit of tax money):

BMW 320D, Nice car. Crap in the snow. And expensive if anything goes wrong.
    Maybe I'm wrong.

I would agree about the Golf, I love Volkswagens. Although I'm afriad their a bit boring. And to get a highline or comfortline. You pay the odds.

The Focus is very nice, I would want the new tax system. So Probaly be an '07 or '08. Your right about buying the best spec one I can find.

Really want an '08. Is that out of my budget.

    EDIT:

That Alfa is stunning, sadly its an Alfa. And it would probaly be in the garage for most of the year.
If I would, I'm afraid it'd have to be lower tax and fuel.

Bit over my budget, but an Irish car.

Little bit high on milage? Interior just drab and worn.
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Focus/1.8-TDCI/201101200808474/advert?channel=CARS

Older, but cleaner. Rep garage too.
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Focus/1.6-TD-L/201026198617869/advert?channel=CARS

Or should I leave the Irish garages. And source from the UK.
Would probaly get a better deal.

Probably every bit as reliable as the other suggestions, and more reliable than the 320d...

Alfa Diesels have got a good reliability rep as does this later 159 model. I have a 156 2.4JTD (among other things) and the fact it kept going with the sheer abuse the previous owner put the engine through was a testament to how well the engine is made.

Regarding the tax, if you look at 2.0 vs 1.8 (as per the Focus) as you mentioned, the difference is pittance! MPG is very good on the Alfa, we get 46mpg and its a 10year old 2.4JTD.

    Thanks for that.
I'll take a test drive, any good years including my budget?
Spec is a big thing in my purchase. If you see any nice online, pass them on.

    Wadda reckin?

    EDIT: Clocked car.

I should add that I get between 55-60 MPG on the motorway in my Beemer...
    which is pretty decent!

Problem with an old shape 2008 Focus is when you come to sell it no one will want it, they will all want the facelift which also came out in 2008. Also Style model is very plain.

Your right. Well I went to see a pre-shape '08 today.
One I had linked in this thread, the garage said it had a FSH.
Looked in the book, nothing there.Just ready to drive it out. And notice the dash
around the odo was craiced. Clocked walked away.

Went to see a post '08 facelift. Really nice, might purchase it.

Im in the same boat as the OP so have been looking at the ceed or i30. Would buy the pro_ceed in the morning but unfortunately I need the back doors for the nipper!! Tough enough to get an 08 Diesel Ceed (EX) for the 10K though. Looking at 08's for the low tax.

Wouldn't be mad on a kia ceed, although no one can argue that their a great car. Looks like I've a deal done (well nearly just waiting on finance) for a post
2008 Ford Focus 1.8 Diesel. 44,000 miles. FSH English car. Out of a Ford garage.
1 years warranty on labour and parts.

I have a Kia C'eed 1.6 CDRi. Zero problems, 7 yr warranty that applies to the car, not the owner.

Fuel consumption is brilliant circa 750km to a tank (52L) urban and c.1200 long distance. Kept in good condition (i.e. proper servicing) it drives like a dream.

Having driven a good number of cars over the years I can't recommend the C'eed enough.

The UK is the best way to go! obviously try Northern Ireland first, then consider looking in Britain (factoring in Ferry-Flight costs), I can personally vouch for car shopping in NI, and even after adding VRT & road Tax it still works out cheaper than buying here!

Autotrader.co.uk will cover all UK cars, including NI cars - Good luck.
