XPS 15 WEI Rating

Just got my XPS 15 yesterday and did the WEI rating test. You can see the results below. The graphics test is only 4.6 which I think is low. My specs are

    Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor (2.53 GHz,3M)
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM
    1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 420M Graphics Card
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive

I think it switches between Intel HD graphics and the Nvidia card. I tried switching on the Nvidia card and it brought the rating up from 4.2.

Is this right? Is there a quick way of toggling on the card?

Just thought this was low as my last laptop 1520 had a Nvidia 8600M card and had a 5.5 rating.

    Any help appreciated

See the thread in building and upgrading. One should not put much faith in the WEI.

Try doing some FPS benchmarks if you wanna push it.

Thanks. Just on another forum someone with a Nvidia 435M card got 6.6. I will download 3DMark11 to do some benchmark tests

You're not running on 'balanced' power by any chance? :pac:

    Will try it again

** Got 4.5 rating which is a little bit lower. I've the nVidia card on from the control panel

    Hey Anitirip,

I have just got my XPS 17 today and here is what i got.
After i run the WEI thing, i came out with the same rating like yours..4.6
Any thoughts? I am no computer geek but 4.6 is very bad isn't it?

    Hi ya,

Thanks for the reply. Did you mean to go to Dell website and download some drivers and stuff? I would of thought the laptop would come with all the latest drivers and stuff, is that the case with Dell?

    Thanks

Don't worry Tom it's fine. The dell XPS i5 uses the nVidia Optimus GPU. Basically our laptops switches between the nVidia card when needed and the Intel HD graphics. The Intel graphics is controlling windows Aero, so that's why we're getting the low score of 4.6 for Aero which brings down our overall score.

In the nVidia control panel you can pick and choose what card you want used for what program, but I can't find how to use the nVidia to control Aero. If you could your score would be 6.6 I think for the 420m card.

This video is helpful also. Hope that helps ;)
