    Hi

    Just a quick question.

Might be playing Royal County Down in the middle of March and I wanted to know if all teeboxes, fairways & greens are open at that time of year. I wouldn't bother if, say, the fairways were out of play.

    Cheers

Why not ring them and ask.

Well I did email them and got no reply so I thought I'd ask on here thinking someone that might have played there around the same time last year would be able to shed some light on it.

Thanks for all your help though.......

Email? As I said ring them.

I'd think the whole course would be playable.

Is it that unbelievable that a person might email a club to get info such as this?

Anyway, I presume all fairways etc will be in play but just wanted to be sure. I know that Ballybunion's fairways were off limits in late February when I played there last year so you never know.

I agree with you but some clubs only appear to have an email address because they think they need one. Sometimes it appears to me that nobody is responsible for tracking the emails. I have emailed RCD and got a response but some clubs still don't really get the idea of email so I'd always ring them if it was important. Not all clubs embrace the internet age.

Yeah, I doubt that RCD really embrace the digital age :)

All fairways, greens, etc were open and immaculate in late November when I played there in 09.

I played it last february and all the fairways were open and there was no temp greens or anything like that. And while you do play off proper tee-boxes, they are pushed up from the ones you play in the summer. They would be closer to the womens tees than the summer mens tees but I think even the womens tees there are 6300+. There are a few holes such as the 1st, 13th, 18th (possibly a few more) where the tee-box used is the same both in summer and winter. Anyways, it's always worth the trip up to play it. Enjoy.

During winters, most links courses will have some measures in operation.

This may be playing off mats (St Andrews), placing ball in left or right rough (Ballybunion) or carrying a divot bag and filling in seed (Portmarnock).

Can't recall what County Down do. Maybe none of the above.

I played it early last Feb (was a bday present) with an 11 handicapper. Everywhere was open and in use, but I was informed by the starter that only "single figure handicappers" could play from the medal tee's, while those with double digit handicaps had to play from the forward tee's. When I informed him that I was off 7 and my partner was off 11, he allowed us to play from the medal tee's.

Try and play the medal tee's, it's a great experience on a super course.

When you say medal tees, what colour tees are you talking. Because the last time I played, which would have been the same month as you, there was only red and white tees, with the red obviously being the womens. I didnt see any other tees. For example, I took my camera around with me to get a few snaps and the white tee box on 4 was down on the same level as the green. The tee shot that you would play here during the summer is from up in the dunes and it plays over a sea of gorse and is spectacular. I took a wander up to the tee boxes in the dunes to take a few snaps and there was no other tees in play which was a pity because that is some tee shot. Maybe it was like that the day I played but I was under the impression they didnt put out the summer tees till May 1st. Were you playing in a competition or something?
