Hi lads,i haves a six month old pointer and starting to become increasingly worried about him not moving away from me to cover more ground. Is this normal in a pointer?I did do my homework before getting him but none of the books i have read covers this in detail. The best advice i've read is having a friend stand a distance away from me and as i send him off to hunt the friend will begin to call the dog, better again if a triangle is formed with a third helper.

What about running the dog with another pointer or setter? The only thing I would advise you is to make sure that if you are going to run your pup with another dog that you make sure hat the other persons dog is under control. The last thing you want is another dog teaching your one bad habits.

Anyways the dog is still quite young and at six months my pointer bitch was very sticky aswell. A german pointer takes time to mature don't worry about it, my bitch was nearly two before she started ranging out.

    Springer:

Unfortunately I'll be of no help to you on this, but can I ask-
    What books did you read?
    And which ones were good?

I'm looking for books on training German Pointers and if you had a couple of titles I'd get on Amazon and see if I can find them!

PS: Was the dog tired? Sometimes my pointers would be quite clingy when they get tired... Or if I walk the same route a few days in a row, they go for a walk rather than hunting as it doesn't excite them?

I wouldn't worry Springer. I've had some like that in the past at that age. The current one was the same. They take a little while to mature and gain confidence. By the time he's a year old you will be wondering what all the fuss was about. When he gets his nose for game it will all fall into place.

Don't panic. The pup is only 6 mths. Both physically and emotionally the pup has a lot of maturing to do yet.
The last thing you want to do is spoil a young pup.
Next season is where you should aiming for ultimately. Put in the work over time and you will reap the rewards.
    Best of luck.

Had a GSP dog before who was a cracker and done this for the first season and a half. Remember hes still classed as a pup till 2 years old! He will grow out of it, dont do too much too soon, most of his training will be self taught all you have to do is get him working to your hand signals and a bit of obedience and the rest will fall into place with time!

1st of all the lads are correct. He is the equivalent of a 3 yr old child so don't expect 2 much 2 soon. Once be gets confidence he will motor I've no doubt.

Some of the best shooting I've had is when my pointer is tired & working slowly at 30 yards. He'll tip along a ditch in front of me & you'd meet every bird. No need to have him 200 yards out in where there ditches.
If you work open country & want him working left & right across you then work on casting the dog. He will go further with time.
When you start birds & he's ready to shoot game you'll be Tryin to reign him in I bet...;)
