What an awesome plane it was :D

Turned out tough for Yeager going for an altitude record... and it killed a lot of German pilots due to its incredible instability at low speed with it's short razor sharp wings...

    Check out the video :)

Chuck Yeager is a Legend. Even his WW2 adventures were amazing, Got shot down, carrys his buddy over the mountains and then fights with the French resistence for a while.
A blockbuster waiting to be made about this man.

He's only a side story in it, some film though, I haven't seen it since I was about twelve.

IIRC the test pilots used to call the early mercury astronauts "spam in a can" because they were basically passengers calling out the dial readings. Bloody brave passengers and how they got their huge balls into pressure suits...... but passengers nonetheless.

It may have been called that before the first death, but it was also the "widow-maker".

I think they were forced onto European Nato forces on the cheap, because the Americans preferred the foreign pilots getting killed to their own.

iirc in the F-104 the pilot ejects through the floor rather than through the canopy, something the movie got wrong. /pushes up glasses.

I heard a story once about an F-104 pilot that has moved onto F16s. On an approach his engine blew out over the runway and he had to eject. His prior training kicked in and he rolled [latex]180^{\circ}[/latex] before punching out...

Yep, it's one great movie that I would certainly recommend.

The lightning was always the badest badass IMO.
In 1984, during a major NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted an American U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe from interception. Records show that Hale climbed to 88,000 ft (26,800 m) in his Lightning F.3 XR749.

Damn you Sir! I was just about to post that very aircraft. :) one of the fastest(if not still fastest) interceptors in aviation history. Whats even better is they came in proper two seaters. None of this in a line front to back bollocks, we're talking like a two seater sports car, side by side. :)

Big fan of the Su-47 myself.

In Soviet Russia, back swept wings are for pussies.

And you can still ride in one without such high risk. It featured in some BBC yoke about two months ago.

Forward swept wings invented and tested by ze Germans in the early 40's. The material tech wasnt so up to it at the time, but the theory was there.

    Mosquito.
+1 :) coooool plane. Partly made of balsa and plywood. One of my rellies, sadly dead now, flew spits and then mossies in WW2. And a couple of other types. The hawker fury was another little beaut I gathered from him. The mosquito was consistently fast and the first true multirole fighterbomber in aviation history.

I am cheered that the majesty that is Chuck yeager beats in the hearts of so many boardsies!. The ace of aces himself, the man with the right stuff!

He is still alive, not breaking any more barriers though. TO think that 63 years ago this man, this supersonic gadfly, this Adonis of the transonic elect, ushered in the new age of aeronautics, in the humble Bell X1, Cadillac of the skies. Its boggles the mind leaves us aghast like wonder wounded hearers. Not only that but, he shot down 5 German planes in one day During WW2 - an ace in day.

    Anyone got any beemans?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Nforce

Loads to choose from...but this is my personal fav...

    F-4 Phantom

*Nerd mode* Btw only the early variants of the F-104 had the downward firing ejection seats. Later models ,like the G's ans S's in Europe were conventional ejection.
Chuck Yeager's record attempts were in a rocket powered NF-104. */Nerd mode* :)
