Got the car serviced today -Focus 2 yrs old with a Ford dealer.
Asked for the full service. My own fault for not asking the cost but when I got the bill 450eur for full service and two front tyres.

The labour alone was 170 and the tyres were 180.
Is this the norm? First time getting the car serviced fully - was expecting 300-340 with the tyres.

    rant over!

labour doesnt sound too bad for a full service and 2 tyres from a main dealer.

    were they premium brand tyres?

Never ever buy tyres of a dealer... Service it youself the next time aswell..

I can't understand how people don't ask how much it will cost them. It beggars belief.

Also, the dealer should have been open about pricing when you were booking in but this is your own doing OP.

Who pays for something completely blind?

Why would you not ask the price?

Service cost is reasonable for a main dealer I think. Tyres depending on brand and type may not be too unreasonable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Stevie Dakota

My 2 year service on the Focus was €170 with a Ford main dealer, no tyres required but made sure to agree the price beforehand.

how can we start debating service costs without knowing the engine and mileage?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

I don't think its acceptable for garages to go ahead with work beyond what was asked for without informing the customer first, happens too much with main dealers especially.

Having said that I'm also amazed that people just pay it and ask questions later.

It aint really that bad and considering that most focus of that era have a 17" alloy. Was there brake pads included in that ??

sounds about right to me for full service and tyres. presume you have a fair few miles on it to get a full service after 2 years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭BoB_BoT

am I reading those numbers right?
How do you get €450 from €170 and €180 ?

    Oh, was labor €270?

In fairness OP what do you expect? You go in ask for the works including tyres and then complain when they charge you accordingly? I mean who really buys tyres from a main dealer?

Who says in the service bay give her the works without first enquiring as to costs? IMHO the dealer was fairly light on you. He could easily have tacked on another €100 or more and there is not a thing you could have done about it.

€170 for a service sounds right, I paid €180 for a service on a Diesel Mondeo. Tyre price does look a bit high. When I left my car in for a service, I told them not to do any "extras", just as well, a side light bulb was gone, they wanted nearly €18.00 to replace it, I got the bulb for lees than €1.00 and done it myself.

Went to a main dealer in Dublin one Saturday last Autumn to have two side mirrors replaced which scumbags had kicked off overnight.
Arrived at 12.30 to find that the non-sales staff had already knocked off for the day (though it was advertised they'd be there till 1pm.)
Salesman told me they tended to knock off early because 'the work isn't there anymore.'
Went back on the Monday and they quoted me around €100 each for the mirrors and reckoned on at least another €50 more in labour (for a 15 minute job).
The lad in the office actually suggested it wasn't really worth their time, they didn't have the parts in stock anyway, and I should just tape them up with masking tape, sure didn't cars in the olden days not have any mirrors at all!
I went to a breakers yard and got both mirrors for around €40 all in, and found a local mechanic to fit them for a score.
Best of all, he found a fifty under the passenger seat when he was doing the job! No idea who it belonged to, so I put it towards the cost. Net result - down a tenner.

Tl;dr: Main dealers apparently don't want the work, and still charge ridiculous prices.

    €170's the labour.

Right, so the OP paid €180 for two front tyres - i'd call that cheap enough to wonder, although it's hard to say without knowing what size/make/model of tyres. That leaves €270 for a service - depending on what was done, that may or may not be reasonable.

Well it leaves the tyres a 90 euro a corner. So unless they are Triangles or Sunnys its not bad.

450... of which 180 for two tyres...

270 of which 170 was for labour...( for service and tyre fitting)

    100 for service parts.....

so taking out the tyres and labour for tyres and disposal costs for tyres looks like the full service cost around the 230.00 mark....

230 for a full main dealer service .... isnt too bad.....

would like ot see what the breakdown for the full service comprised of

I think the OP may have felt ripped off because he saw all these €99 and €150 services advertised but when you look in to these they are the basic of the basic and usually won't cover anything beyone oil, oil filter and air filter change along with a top up of other fluids and that's your lot.

Each car is driven differently and in different conditions so will be subject to different wear and tear.

So basically, you went in, told them to do the work, didn't ask anything about price, and when they give you the price, it's a rip off?

Can you break down the price a bit more? €170 for labour. And...

How many hours did they charge you for labour?
    What about parts?
    Tyres, what brand?

Although I do think it's a bit sharp changing tyres without asking first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,794 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

To be honest. when OP didnt ask about price, what did he expect?
It was always going to be €350 plus anyway so its hardly the scam of the century so lesson learned I say.
I doubt they changed tyres without being instructed.

€450.00 sounds about bang on for a full service with 2 tyres from a main Ford dealer.

The OP asked for a full service and he/she got a full service...
But I really doubt it that more than a handful of dealers would proceed with replacing major components without a prior nod from the owner.
Because we've read a few "horror" stories on boards, that doesn't mean we should generalize.Of course it's easier...
I don't think that Hellrazer or myself (and a few other lads I'm not aware of) would be the only main dealer employees in the whole country, who would like to hang on to their customers.

Note for Future: When you are handing over the keys tell them to call you if anything extra needs doing, such as wipers etc.

    Always works for me.

Tyres are not part of any periodic inspection/service. Something like that should never be replaced without first contacting the customer with prices/options and getting their go ahead

Two things NEVER to say to ANY garage:

    1: Full Service
2: get it ready for the NCT.

You will immediately see Euro signs light up in their eyes coupled with a manic grin.

Thanks Hellrazer - that's all I wanted to know. Wasnt sure what the norm was. Realise it was my bad for not agreeing price up front.
I did ask for the tyres that were fitted. 2 Continentals 205/16's because I had never heard of the other brand he mentioned for a tenner less a tyre didn't make sense to me.

Full break down as per invoice:
    Work 170
    Cleaner glass .90
    Spark plugs 15.32
    Filter Assya - OiL 9.72
    2 tyres 162.66
    Semi sytethic oil 29.75
    Bulb 1.64
    Filter element 16.09
    Total + vat 466.29

Continental are good tyres, thats why their a bit expensive.

That was quite reasonable for a dealer. €80 each for 16" Conti's is very good too.

You would have saved €50 at an indy (maybe), but there is no rip off going on here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,937 ✭✭✭patwicklow

well your just paying for the ford stamp could have been done alot cheaper like my mondeo 2 new tyres fitted €120 full service €100= €220
and car running like a dream...even happier now as i was.nt ripped off:)

You think that's bad? Getting my GS300 (3L V6) serviced by Lexus in a couple of weeks. €300 for an intermediate service - oil, oil filter and cabin filter! Have to get it done by Lexus to keep (approved used) warranty.
