Media Player sound trouble

    Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post (apologies) so Mods please feel free to move it.

Basically, I have this media player.

I downloaded a heap of movies recently, specifically Bluray. Unfortunately, there is no sound on some of them. I got Saving Private Ryan with sound (MKV file) but when I downloaded Inception (MKV) I got no sound. Just picture.

I'm not very computer savvy at all so am looking for a simple, dumbed down version of how to fix this, if it is at all possible to fix.

    Thanks.

Check the settings for your media player, in particular the audio options. Maybe the audio output can be changed. On mine which is a WD TV I can choose either stereo or digital.

The films themselves could be the issue.

What audio is attached to the films that won't work ???

Err I'm not sure... Again, not great with computers.

Unfortunately, I'm also at work so I guess that's no good :o

MKV is just a container for video and audio streams. Your player has to be able to play both. You need to find out what audio codec the troublesome files are using and see if your player supports them, and if it doesn't you'll have to transcode the audio. Not a huge job if you know what you're doing, but if you're not great with computers it could be a bit of a pain.

Download MediaInfo here http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download/Windows and run it on the file in question and report back.

I'm only moderately computer savvy and managed to transcode my mkvs audio from DTS to stereo so I could play them on my WDTV. Once you figure out how to do it it's pretty easy and you can do them all together as a batch. There's a good guide here.

Unfortunately a lot of cheaper media players don't decode DTS probably to keep the price down (I think the manufacturers have to pay a fee to Dolby for this) and just pass the digital audio through to an optical out - you'll need an amp with an optical in and DTS support to hear anything.

I've given the WDTV to my sister and got an Acer Revo 36100 running XBMC - much, much better!
