Remedies for tired legs...

    Just wondering what remedies you use for tired/achey legs?

    After my LSR at the weekend, my legs were not happy on the recovery run this evening! Just a general tired and achey feeling (no injuries so not looking for any medical advice).

    What do you recommend for recovering from long runs? Any tips appreciated!

    There are others on here with better advice ... but generally tired and achy is not unusual after an LSR. One thing that makes a difference for me is stretching after the run. If I skip/skimp on this I will start to feel the effects within a few days/sessions (recently got lazy and was reminded of this by my legs !). I find it I run the recovery slow enough I feel better after the run than before it.

    Have you tried lying on the floor with your legs up in the air, maybe rested on the back of the sofa or something for about 3-5 mins. Get up slowly afterwards. The blood runs out of your legs when up and is replaced with fresh blood! Yes, I know it makes no sense but it works for me, could be in the mind, but so what!

    Stretch, and stretch again. I recently got a few leg massages from a physio-friend, and the difference I've felt since has been huge. Well worth the initial outlay. They can teach you which stretches you really need to do and you will feel the benefit

    try compression tights,
    bought a pair a couple of months ago and never looked back,
    as soon as i'm showered put them on under trousers and keep them on for the rest of the day, no aches, pains or tired legs.:D

    rub some tiger balm into your legs and it works wonders. Stinks though ;)

    Stretching and bathing your feet in epsom salts.

    Running your recovery runs very slowly (slower than LSR Pace) also helps.

    yep as already said - stretches, good shower or bath, put the skins tights on, feet up and get some protein in.

    From personal experience:
    Get a good stretching routine (plenty examples online or from physios) and do it on a daily basis. Also buy and use
    a foam roller every night before bed. Very simple and
    effective for Both recovery and injury prevention!

    Good sleep, eat healthy and avoid over training. If these key principles are followed the aches and pains should disappear following any regeneration run.

    i saw this advice in the runners world mag as well , havent tried it out yet , cant remem the science behind it now but def made sense when i read it ,

    make sure u eat somthing whitin 20mins after ur long run,milk and banana,recovery drink,choc milk,annthing with protien and a carbs in it..

    Swimming!

    When I first started doing longer runs at the weekend, I used to really look forward to getting into the pool on Monday mornings...found the legs were in great shape after a steady swim.

    after each long run leading uop to the DCM i stretched out fully and got a warmn but with the Radox muscle recovery bath stuff (its blue in color).

    I found it great and my legs were all right within a couple of hours

    Stretch followed by an Ice Bath.

    I would do a very slow 30 min recovery run the day after, IMO its better to do a recovery run followed by a rest day then the other way around.

    Some great tips there, cheers. Tried a few and legs feeling good now :D. I'm sure I'll be back to read before next LSR so I have post run all planned out!
