Wood Pellet Stove flue arrangement

Hi all. I'm currently looking at my options regarding Wood Pellet Stove installation. I recently contacted a supplier who pointed out to me that many of his cutomers do not like the idea of running a large flue up an external wall and above the eaves. I tend to agree. He mentioned I could opt for a system that just exhausts straight out the external wall.

This would void any grant application with the SEAI but as the supplier pointed out, the grant is worth €800 and that would roughly be the cost of purchasing and installing a flue that ran up to the roof.

I'm inclined to not install a large flue if it isn't necessary. Has anyone any thought on this?

Also, has anyone experienced problems due to fan noise on wood pellet stoves? I would be looking to installing a stove within feet of my living room TV.

I have just bought a wood pellet stove (not commised yet will be next week) and got it @ a good price you need a twin wall flue the grant will cover flue cost pm me if you want to know where I got the stove it was under €1000 euro for 11kw I think you need the flue to get rid of the gases that is generated by the wood pellets also there is a small bit of ash that will come out of flue and if you just go straight out the wall could blacken your wall.

Wood pellet stoves are solid fuel combustion devices and as such require a full flue system.

Well you certainly must ensure a wood pellet system exhausts to the outside of the building granted, but I do believe it is not required that you run a 'full' flue above the eaves. It should be enough to just run the exhaust straight out the external wall. I have confirmed this in a few installation manuals of pellet stove manufactirers.

Presumably pellet stove exhausts produce very little smoke. I would like to hear of other people's experience in this matter though. It would not be desireable to have my wall blackened with sut and cresote even if it takes a longer time for this to happen.

    Hi,

Actually you must go over the eaves, (passed the gutter).
As far as I know we are one of the few who advertise repiars and service for wood pellet stoves, the vast majority of the problems I come across are due to bad installation, and number one on the offences list is leaving the flue short.

Wood pellet stoves must be installed in full compliance with Part J of the building regs, you can save some money today not fitting the flue properly but I can guarantee you that it will cost more in the long run between fumes fans and decorating your room it's not worth the saving.

The only stoves I know of that show a pipe through the wall are not made in the E.U. (USA or Canada) what has been left out is the necessity to have a back up power supply fitted, appears it's easier / cheaper with 110 volt electricity.

There are also pages showing the right way to install the flue in the very same manuals.

Take care it's your home with your family in it why take chances?

    .
