Are you getting the PRND1234 lighting up on the dash? If so, the problem is the more common gearbox ECU failure. If you get someone to confirm this the ECU can be reconditioned. Unfortunately the A4/A6 autobox of that vintage is notorious for expensive problems.

Skirting? Do you mean that it feels like the clutch is slipping?

Sounds like a new box. I had one the same and then eventually reverse went. I changed the oil even before any problems.

Well I am not going to tell you because my car was an A8 and was a difficult job. Yours might be more straightforward and you have a good chance of getting a recon box.

The oil should be changed in those Audi gearbox's every 40,000 miles to prevent most problems, the same variomatic box can be found in the VW Passat and the Skoda Octavia.
If the oil is left too long it becomes acidic and attacks the electronics which unfortunately are inside the box. There is a fix that can be done without removing the box but it is not endorsed by VAG!!
