I was wondering if anyone has come across or used a study coach. This is someone who can act as a coach and mentor to good study habits, check progress, motivate etc. its not the content of the subjects but rather the approach, planning and execution of a study plan and staying motivated.

All suggestions/experience very welcome...its for my teenage daughter coming up to her leaving cert.

    thanks!

how about you??? you don't have to hire a "study coach" i think you would be wasting money...like for me my girlfriend is my motivator and the fact i want to do well in my leaving..so you don't need one ...but if you would like to waste money be my guest ....

    Where are you based?
What qualifications do you expect the person to have?
    How much are you paying?

I have tried doing this myself but it is too long since I did the leaving cert, time is an issue and taking direction from your dad at 16 doesnt always work.

I am based in Naas and would set it up like regular grinds except the focus would be planning, reviewing etc across all subjects. I would have thought someone with recent Leaving cert experience (and good results) would fit the bill. But where do I find someone? Suggestions very welcome.

We can make appointments in our school with a mentor, she's really good but it's probably just cos we're under the DARE programme, I don't really know why else it would be.

    Thanks SS,

Could you elaborate on this...not sure if I understand? Are there study mentors in schools?

Only in a handful of schools and usually disadvantaged ones. It's a pilot programme in our school and there are a handful of them working privately too. It's quite a specialised area, we get more homework from our study mentor than most other teachers!

When I gave grinds in the past I included most of this in the subjects I was teaching, but it was an 'added bonus' rather than a coaching job. In one way it would be fairly simple for a person to set themselves up to do this sort of coaching, but there's no specific qualifications I can think of for such a job so the quality of applicants would be mixed. Also it would be difficult to find someone equally good at all subjects. As for where to find someone, well you could always advertise for it in the local paper or boards if there's a section here to ask for grinds. You'd probably have to set up some sort of interview process after that.

Thanks for your comments re ad. If direct enquiries dont work then its on to an ad. My strong preference is for someone who is recommended.
