Has anyone studied the effects of the smoking ban?

It's been nearly 6 years since the ban and I have been wondering has it had any effect on the number of smokers: has it gone up, down or stayed the same. Does anyone know of any studies in to this? I'm also curious if the change in behaviour from has led to people smoking less or perhaps even people taking up smoking as "going out for a smoke" has seemingly created a new culture of socialising with the people who smoke.

I've seen my father take to only smoking outside the house (or well at least most of the time he smokes) and I have a feeling that the process of going outside has led to a decline in the amount he smokes.

Do these things have any effect?
