Boiler efficiency

As a result of a fault on our boiler we have left it running as whenever we turn it off, it does not come back on. However we have turned the temp on the boiler setting way down to 40 and then turn off all radiators overnight/when not in use. Is this going to wind up costing us a fortune in the next gas bill? Anyone else with similar experiences or advice on whether this is an efficient way to actually run the boiler.
