Just wondering how competent cyclo cross bikes are on the rough stuff. Could you take one around an mtb trail? Or are they really only for muddy field type stuff?

It depends on the trail. Generally it would be a slow and uncomfortable experience though.

    Depends on the rider.

I've rode my UJC pretty much on any XC trail i'd ride. You may not be faster, but i wouldnt call it uncomfortable.

But...you have to be aware that steep stuff will feel steeper.

I have a cyclocross bike myself and I used to do the MTB routes in the flat countries on the continent and it was great craic but here the routes are too rough or too rocky for it. The only thing you can do is go on the fire access tracks through in the woods like a few laps of them, but its not the same thing.

What's the standard gearing on a cyclo cross bike anyway? Compact? Triple?

How many off-road opportunities are there for pounding out a 53:11 ?? :)

Unless you have mad skillz, you will bleed.

An mtb will take a lot more abuse, I'd say a cross bike would break eventually on the rough stuff. Even the size of mtb tyres (around 54mm) absorbs a lot more shocks than cross tyres (around 32mm). and then braking is a lot better for the downhills.

Ehhh gearing is generally 46 - 12 max.....

Mostly specific grearing. Either 44/36 ish or a single up front 42-44

Personally one bike is 44 single, one is 44/38 with 12-28 standard over 9 on the back. 9 as it tends to clog less than 10...a bit.
