Dublin -- bass wanted for originals band

    Hello lads,

We're a Dublin-based originals band looking for a bass player, ideally who can sing and/or harmonise. And also contribute to future songwriting.

We're sort of rocky electric/acoustic. You can get a better sense of what we sound like from the demos here:

    http://www.myspace.com/rivercitypublic

We rehearse in the city centre and are open to members of any gender. We aren't too worried about age -- it's more about personality and musical compatibility -- but if age is an issue for you, we're in our 30s. We have gigged extensively around Dublin, but gigging experience is not necessarily a prerequisite. Enthusiasm and fun are.

Look forward to hearing from you...

By the way, the half of the band that's left consists of electric guitar and a singer with an acoustic.

Now that I think about it, keys might also be a good addition...

Is no-one going to even slag off the music in an unconstructive manner?

I could slag it off constructively for you if that's any good.

Actually, I've changed my mind. I'm not going to slag it off at all :). I'm listening to Busking on George Street as I'm writing this. What I'm hearing reminds me of stuff like REM or Smashing Pumpkins in their lighter moments. The group as a whole is very tight and whoever recorded and mixed it did a good job as I can pick out all of the instruments easily.
My only slight criticism would be for the bass. I thought it might do something different around the 3 minutes mark but unfortunately not. The bassline is nice and bouncy throughout but could do with a little bit of variation at some point in the song.

Why thank you, sir, you're a gentleman! Nice to have a fresh pair of ears listen to it; every time I do, I find another f*ck-up that drives me mad...

Oh, and just to clarify: it won't be a case of prospective members being told "these are the songs, play them." We'd like you to have as much creative/songwriting input as you'd like.

I take it Malice you are a bass player?
I am the bass player in the recordings and I mixed the tracks too.
Main reason for keeping the basslines simple is that I was singing throughtout too. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

Yep, how did you guess? :p
As for singing and playing at the same time, well done, I've tried that in the past and I find once the music gets even slightly complicated I have problems keeping it all together.

hi lads, are you still looking for drummer?
i only picked up drummer aprox 2years now.(could say intermediate level drummer)since then i help put together an orgidinal band with similar sound to yours. i wrote lyric's for 4 or 5 of our songs and i also sing but mostly backing or harmonies, tough being a singing drummer.
when and where do you reserse?
oh yeah the age thing my lads range from 30 to 44 and i'm somewhere in the middle.
look to be straight i have not yet gigged, but i love music and the fun of trying to put it together.
just let me know if you're interested

Yep, still looking! We have a drum possibility, but nothing's tied down yet because of the ongoing bass search... We tend to rehearse in Dublin city centre (Applerock) as it's central, near Connolly and has parking...

my band might be on the rocks, so the bass player might be also looking so if you have a drummer sorted i'll pass the message on to my bass player.

Nice one! I dunno if we have a drummer sorted. We had a a verbal expression of interest a couple of weeks ago over a pint (he's a mate from an old band) but I haven't talked to him since then. I'll give him a buzz to see what the crack is.

    Hi Lads,

thought I'd throw my name into the ring as potential bassplayer.

    A brief background of me....
    well,
used to be the bassplayer in a Dublin band called Suddenly Smith.
We havent been around in about 12 years now but we got together again, briefly, last year for about 6 months.
Didnt last due to singer buggering off back to Australia !!!!

we did pretty well "back in the day " and when the band split I kinda lost interest.
Hadnt really played until last year and now my interest in coming back !

I do need a bit of rehearsal time but sure no harm in that !

also, Im now officially an "old geezer" @ 41 years old,as described by my 5 year old (just cause I beat him on xbox ) :D

Stil have my Fender Jazz Precision Lyte bass but no amp anymore (wife thought money could be better spent on the kids :eek: )

if yer anyway mad enough to be interested let me know and we could meet up.

    cheers

    Ian

Pretty sure I remember that band name, actually!

Always interested, and sure, no amp? That's what DIs were invented for!

We have to sort through some stuff over the next week or so, but a meet-up should be definitely on the cards...

enjoyed your music .. tight , punchy , catchy and nice hooks .. all good ..

I used to be the drummer in this band. If you're in two minds about joining up then let me tell you that you won't meet two nicer guys (the two that are left). They're also super musicians. I miss them. Dreadfully. But I know they'll always have a special place in their hearts for me.

    Hi lads,

Sorry for taking so long to get back, but you know how it is...

We've had a couple of rehearsals with a new line up, and things are looking good -- though it's early days, of course! I'm going to ask Malice to close this thread for now, and I hope that -- if things go pear shaped -- some of you may still be interested in the future.

    Thanks all.

    G
