Hi guys. Firstly all help and answers are appreciated.
My son 'almost' received a present from his Uncle, who lives in Oz. Its a pair of trainers. He bought them in Hong Kong, presumably through a credit card, and Customs have now ceased them. They are looking for a receipt, which I dont have, 21% vat on the purchase price, and a further 6e for the postal fees?! Principle point, I told them to shove it. I'm not paying for something I did not purchase, and its a gift, simple
Customs have now told me they are sending the parcel back to its country of origin, and have given me a tracking no, so we can try to get his Uncle his money back.
Is it possible, or has anyone out there, retrieved a parcel from An post after Customs got their sticky hands on it? I mean, for Gods sake, its just a pair of trainers for a 13 year old, but it means something to my son, who hasn't seen his uncle in 2 years.
Any help guys is much appreciated. I'm refusing to pay for something I did not order, and revenue have taken enough off me in general.

    Hello IfIwasonlyrich.

Have a look at the following thread. It spells out what the rules are. Unless you can produce a receipt for less than € 45.00 including postage, regardless of the fact that is is a gift, VAT is due on it.

Whilst I empathise with your situation, these are the rules that apply to imports. Feel free to PM me or post with further details so we can have a look at it in more detail and see if it might be possible to make a case. However, am not very optimistic.

Hi, My son is getting a 5th generation ipod touch in the mail from his grandmother from canada, its insured for 400 Canadian and its shipping costs were 67.00 dollars, I am trying to figure out what price I will have to pay in duty or vat so I can get a ball park idea how much money I will need. Does anyone know what an ipod touch is classified as for tax purposes, it is listed as a gift as well even though I know it exceeds the ampunt allowed. Thanks in advance

All landed, I reckon that will cost EUR50 more than if she sent you the money and you purchased it in Ireland.

    Hi guys,

I my mom sent me a large parcel from home in America with birthday and christmas gift for myself and my partner. I'm now being charged 117.00 Euros customs on these gifts. I do not even know what she has sent, I certainly didn't pay for any of these items.

Am I still required to pay this customs fee if the items are gifts which I didn't pay for?

    Thanks for your help.

I suggest you have a look at the links in the previous posts. However, bottom line is : If the values exceed the limits you are liable for Duty and VAT.
