Can I use a cancelled passport as ID?

It has the corners cut off and a CANCELLED stamp on every other page, but the laminate page is intact. I'd rather use this instead of my valid passport and my Garda ID is still "in the post". Should it be accepted in most places?
    Thanks :pac:

nowhere has to legally accept it as a valid format but many places would I'm sure. It was one of the thing I was specifically told to reject while working in an offo

Many places won't accept it. Seems pretty stupid to me. It's still going to be you in the picture.

Don't think they have to technically, mostly cos its no hassle to a person over 18 to give their cancelled passport to anybody to use.

I'm sure some places will let you in on the basis that it makes more sense to carry a cancelled one so your real one doesn't get damaged or lost.
And if its only just out of date I assume most of them would believe and be reasonable about the fact your waiting for a new one.

So, I'm saying try it n see

It was only cancelled 2 years ago because it got wet, so no I'm not 10 in the picture!
And I do have a valid passport but for obvious reasons I'd rather not take that on a night out when I can use this one

Aren't they waterproof? How wet did you get it? Or is it a matter of what wet it?

I haven't worked doors in years but i would never accept one. when I was young people would get a cancelled passport and pull up the laminate on a hotplate to change the photo.

Why not take a driving licence out? Are these still accepted? I haven't been ID'd in about 6 years.

Some airlines accept expired passports for travel, not sure about cancelled.

OP, get an age card! It's much handier than using a passport all the time.

EDIT: just re-read OP - presume "garda ID" is age card?

The visa pages aren't waterproof, and it was actually milk.. Brought it to the Garda station and they said they had to cancel it because the visa pages couldn't be stamped anymore.

Garda ID is indeed an age card :)

We don't recognize cancelled/out of date passports as valid ID, age only or not.

    Is there any particular reason?

It can depend on who it is working. I used mine in a pub in town and it was fine, went back the next week with it and another barman said they couldn't accept it. Looks like I'll just bring my valid one out with me from now on!

Money transfers in Western Union requires an ID that is in date. The banks also don't accept the passports for the same reason.

AFAIK for anything else (bar country border checks), an expired passport can be used as a valid ID for up to 2 years after its expiry

I use to do the door in a nightclub in Athlone. I never accepted cancelled passports. My reason was that I was seeing too many of them been given to under agers. I just out right refused to accept them.
I remember a girl had one before and it was only recently cancelled, I was bored that night so decided to humour her. I flicked through the visa pages to see if she had been to any exotic locations. She informed me that she wasn't abroad in a long time. She forgot to mention that she was recently back from 2 weeks in the USA. She says "oh yeah I forgot, here look at my boots card its really me!" .......Ah god loves a trier.

I don't get why cancelled passports are refused, it's not like someone's date of birth has changed since they got a new one.

True. As Dara Ó Briain said "But I'm still him!"
