Young Kestrel/Hawk Trapped

There is a young Kestrel or Hawk type bird trapped in our warehouse. It's a stunning bird and I would hate to see it die up in the rafters...

Theres a huge rolling door in the side of the building which I have opened to the max hoping he'll find his way but he keeps flying up into the rafters rather than swoop down the two feet and out the door.

He's been there since yesterday evening. I went out this morning to see he had a little mouse in his claw so he's smart enough to keep himself fed!

How can I encourage him in the right direction?

Thats good to see that he is feeding himself.
If he is smart enough to fly down low and catch a mouse, he will probably find the open barn door given some time.
Just leave the barn door open if thats possible and stay away. Without anyone near him he might be less afraid of flying down low.

I can leave it open till 5.30 but have to shut up shop at that stage. If he's still there I should probably leave him out some water, right?

I'd leave some meat at the door for the night then leave meat again by the door when its open again the next day hoping he'd cop on to the open door once collecting the meat, id keep repeating that till he does!

Yes, do leave some water. There probably is no point in leaving out meat, as it is almost certainly a Kestrel and they will only take live prey normally. I may be able to assist you with expert contacts who would help you release the bird, could you tell us (in GENERAL terms) what part of the country you are in (ie what county say).

    Thanks

Its ok guys, Kestrel and mouse have left the building :) He found his own way out...

Amazing bird though, couldnt believe he still caught the mouse even though he was obviously stressed at being trapped inside.

Mission accomplished, great to hear he got out. The last Kestrel I heard of in a warehouse was stuck for three days, before it had to be caught & let out.
