For employers/hr people etc: at what point, if any, do you google a candidate?

At what point in the hiring process, if at all, would you google a candidate?
Also please state the field, nature of the jobs you would be involved in hiring for.
    Thanks

I'm not in HR, but I would Google candidates as soon I decided I wanted to call them in for an interview (onsite or phone). I'm in IT.

Thanks. I mean anyone involved in the decision making process really as regards interviews and hiring. I just said HR because they were the first ones to come to mind for me.

I was quite suprised with what turned up when I googled myself. Stuff from newspapers from ten years ago and more. My OH found loads of stuff on me when she went to look. But when I went to check her, she has the same name as a well known actress, virtually impossible to find anything not about the actress!

did you try putting "Ireland" into the search ...or her county or town/city?

    Just checked myself

I have just one email address and you can see all my youtube comments if you googled it from my CV

My comments aren't bad though they're not something I'm proud of either, mainly blasting candidates on The Apprentice on BBC.
And more comments on an Irish motorcycle forum, they're fine actually, I'd stand over them

Time for a new email address I think, thanks OP!

    I'm in security.

I don't google many people as I find if you look dodgy in an interview, why would I google you to confirm that you only look dodgy, and are not in fact dodgy.

I google'd a few people who's CV's were too fantastic to believe, only for the small joy of poking holes in their history whilst telling them that they are not hired.

I do it before we make a hiring decision.

    Facebook/etc.

I'm in IT and graduate recruitment and I'd Google a candidate before I send them out to a client for their first interview. I use Boolean to get a deep search, sometimes stuff can be buried in a way that is hard to get.

I remember some time ago about a guy from Austrailia who posted on facebook about going out on the rip only for him to call into work sick the next day,I think he got the red card from the employer at the time this got me and a mate thinking why would you join the likes of facebook etc and post things about going on the rip etc for others to see.

I eventually gave in about two years ago and joined FB as there was a few guys that I was training with that lived in different countries etc and they showed me how easy it is to stay in contact,I have googled myself but due to my name being as common as muck and also having some high profile stars with the same name I gave up looking for myself:p.
Surely the C.V will give you the info you require then go and do the back ground checks(in one industry that I worked in you are required to clear a 10year back ground check by the Gardai)although the industry I work in is large employing 100000s someone allways know's a person working in another company.;)
