Unfortunately, even at that price, there's no best headphone, different ones have different sound signatures and which is the best one will depend on your taste and what kind of music you listen to. I'd advise trying to demo some of them to see which ones your ears like best.

Some brands you should be looking at:
    Sennheiser
    Denon
    Grado
    Beyerdynamic
    Audio-Technica
    Ultrasone

    Some useful sites:

I've bought a number of high-end headphones, from Sennheiser, Denon, Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica. My favourites are the Sennheiser HD650, which, with their open-backed design give a very natural sound, the closest I've heard to live music. But some say they're not the best you can get for dance music (which doesn't bother me as I don't listen to much of it) so they may not be the best selection for everyone.

If you listen primarily to vocal/guitar music, I think they're a good choice (however a decent level of amplification is recommended for them, so not suitable for listening to with your iPod). If they're out of your price range, Sennheiser have recently brought out the HD598 which are supposed to be very good as well, and have a similar sound signature.

My god thank you for all that a great help it will be I was looking at the Bose 15 http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/noise_cancelling_headphones/quietcomfort_15/index.jsp whay you think of them (If I can ask you again).

I only tried the Bose noise-cancelling headphones briefly, at a listening stand at an airport, so take my view with a pince of salt. I didn't really like the sound of them, there seemed to me a synthetic/filtered quality to it. I know they're using a microphone on the outside to record ambient sound and cancel it, so maybe this was colouring my judgment, knowing that the sound was being interfered with, but still my impression was that it wasn't a natural sound. If you're doing a lot of travelling and want to cancel out airplane engine noises, they might be worth considering. But if noise cancellation isn't a requirement, I think there may be better sounding headphones around.

A quick search on head-fi seems to indicate they're not too highly regarded there either:

If you are going for the likes of the 650s you should factor in that a headphone amp is required to get the best out of them.
