    Peter Yates

Haven't seen a thread about this, so just thought I'd say RIP to the director of one my favorite films Summer Holiday Bullitt.

Apart from the car chase, for which is it usually mentioned, this film is still one of the 'coolest'/classiest films I've ever seen. The pacing through most of the film is slow and measured; the dialogue and acting are understated but compelling; and the music and style are the epitome of 60's cool.

There are a lot of modern cop film clichés throughout the simple story; the bureaucratic police officials getting the way of the 'real' police, the woman he has to keep separate from his job, the fact that he lives for his job etc etc, but they're handled handled in a classy way, without the need for OTT scores and other manipulative bs.

Obviously I highly recommend it; but just as a simple cop movie and not the high octane 'best car chase ever' film, that it is often advertised. Don't get me wrong, I love the car chase, but I don't think the expectation delivers the first time, due to what most modern audiences have become used to; the car chase is as understated as the rest of the film).

Also some children of the 80's may also remember Krull!! :D
This was on over Christmas again and I thought it was great fun. Hadn't seen it in years but it is still fantastic nonsense.

Anyone else have fond memories of his films ?

My favourite Yates film is Murphys Way (1971) about an Irishman who takes on a German sub in Venezuela. Hourable mentions for The Hot Rock, The Yakuza and Eyewitness (aka The Janitor)

Watched Krull over the chrimbo again too. That movie scarred me as a child, scared the absolute crap out of me, still pretty entertaining today too :)

Bullit stil has one of the best car chases ever. RIP.

He also directed Run Of The Country, great little Irish movie - very underrated and mostly ignored at the time.

I really recommend it if you haven't seen it.

Remember getting the following out on video when I was a kid also and really recall really liking it at the time, haven't seen it since:

    RIP
