Just saw the flooding in Australia on Sky News and it's so bad with loss of life, we're so lucky over here we don't get any extremes of weather. My thoughts are with those people who have lost loved ones.

Ive just been watching ABC news AUstralia. I feel so bad for them. Its a desparate situation. To get worse again, they are saying.

in fairness their premier seems to be playing a blinder, constantly giving updates. She also had a lady beside her, using sign language so EVERYONe gets the message. I cant ever remember any leader having a spokeperson for deaf by their side. Brilliant.

There was no thread on the Pakistan floods of August 2010 despite the floods directly affecting about 20 million people, mostly by destruction of property, livelihood and infrastructure, with a death toll of close to 2,000.
Maybe it was not a sexy enough story or did not get the same coverage?

The point about the Australian floods in the context of this forum is that an advanced country cannot yet manage to give people reasonable warning of floods even when in full emergency mode.

The people have settled and built in flood plains and narrowed the rivers.

It's sad really, having battled drought for so long they probably thought they'd never see the likes of what has happened over the past few days. I suppose it gives us all pause for thought, expect the unexpected when it comes to weather.

that cyclone (cyclone vince) is off the North west coast of Western Australia (kimberley/Pilbara regions) literally thousands of miles away from the flooded parts of Queensland. Unless its the wrong link?

TC Vince is not expected to affect the Australian coast.

Remarks:

Tropical Cyclone Vince is expected to intensify as it moves towards the east-southeast over the next 36 hours. It is then expected to curve around to the southwest and travel parallel to the Pilbara coast.

THE CYCLONE IS NOT EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE WA COAST.

Tropical Low 1 to the northeast of Queensland should take a curve back southeastwards over the next few days, taking it away from land.

It is a bit disconcerting the way the media coverage of the Australian floods far outweighs the rest, especially when you consider the fact that many more people have been killed and displaced in these other countries. Shame on the Irish media.

I think maybe because there are a lot of Irish in Australia could be a reason for media hush on other floods. More Irish people could possibly be affected if they have loved ones in the danger zones in Oz. Lots of Irish families have emmigrated there recently. Lots of Irish back packers there annually.

I suppose that could be a reason Jake1, and I guess this kind of thing is not common in Australia either so it deserves good coverage. But still with the tremendous loss of life in these other countries they shouldn't be forgotten about.

But they're only lowly Sri Lanka and two African countries. Don't you know that people in those regions are not as important as those of "developed" nations? Anybody who tries to highlight their plight on here again will get banned for a week! :rolleyes:
