Accounting Technician - question on exemptions.

At the moment I'm doing Accounting Technician year one, is it true that I only have to pass Taxation and Financial Accounting and just one of Law or Business to progress into second year of the course?

Maybe I misread it but I am sure I read in an ATI booklet that all exams have to be passed in one sitting to qualify for exemptions from the accounting bodies. Does this mean if I fail an exam in May but pass the repeat exam in August I will not qualify for an exemption when I finish the ATI course? Does it also mean I will have to pass both Law and Business rather than just one of them in order to qualify for exemptions?

The main exemption when I was doing AT (passed FAE in 2004) was that if you had enough points in your leaving cert and got all the first year exams in first sitting, they'd let you skip year 2 of AT and go straight to Prof 2 of chartered.

It may have changed since then. You should contact IATI & CAI.

Thanks, Clanket. I know you did the AT course a few years ago but how many years did it take you to qualify after you finished the AT course and what route did you take? Do you think the AT course helped you much in the end?

AT course is helpful but not much more advanced than leaving cert accounting. You should aim to skip year 2 if possible and go to Prof 2. Much faster.

Remember you have to complete a training contract when doing the CA's which will take 4 years. The quicker you start it the quicker you'll be finished.

Thanks Clanket. Please excuse my ignorance but what exactly is Prof 2?

It's now called CAP1 under the new syllabus since 2008. It was Prof 2 under the old chartered accountancy exam syllabus.

There's two CAPs. CAP 1 replaced Prof 2, CAP 2 replaced Prof 3 and well FAE is still called FAE but syllabus and exam format have been revised.
