High milage or not?

What is considered high milage on Range Rovers? I'm looking at the 2.7 TDV6 sport but can only really afford 80k plus milage ones. How high can these go without turning into money pits?

If it's regularly serviced and had oil changes, 80k is nothing, barely run in. Most modern diesels with the proper care will do 200-300k. Look for some kind of service history, from an independent is fine, more trustworthy than the main dealers anyway.

For any recall/maintenance issues with the RRS, look here - http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/

You'll get a good full fat Range Rover for similar or less money and it's a far better vehicle (the Sport is an entirely different animal). The Range Rover Sport is more closely related to the Discovery 3/4, same T5 platform and production line.

A LR/RR mechanic I know tells me they are a heap of dirt and give serious trouble, he is with them years!

I would give them a wide berth, low or high mileage!

That LR mechanic should know better than making sweeping statements like that, I hate this unhelpful type of "my mate down the pub says" type of post

They don't give serious problems (but owners lack of care and maintenance will )

Constructive informed critism is fine and Land Rover must be doing something right as hundreds of thousands of Disco 4/RRS (same mechanically) have been sold worldwide. Most problems originate from LR's bad policy of letting early customers do the fault finding and appaling customer service from the dealers, the vehicles themselves aren't a problem.
Despite that, LR's overall sales were up 28% last year and Discovery sales up 48%

    Rant over! :o

Thanks 101Sean. There are a couple of RR's 3.0 with decent milage and service histories in my range.

You believe the are better? Why? I thought the disco 3/4 were good jeeps?

The Range Rover is Land Rover's top of the range vehicle and comes with all the toys. The RRS was an effort to gain a more sporty image and counter the X5, it's more night club bouncer than the Gentleman's club Range Rover. It's more a matter of image and comfort.than anything else

The Disco 3/4 is slightly more utilitarian but has more room inside than the RRS but is mechanically the same. All varieties are phenomenally good on or off road.

Sorry I should have said Rangerovers and the new Discos!

Sorry again, but I trust this mans word, he is a great mechanic and has been working on both for years!

Personally I wouldn't rely on sales figures to give me an indication of reliability, somethings sell because of looks or image, somethings sell on a name or a reputation!

Fair enough, we'll agree to differ! Be nice to know what problems your mechanic has come across to give him such a hardened opinion, I expect he's cursed over a few of the old P38 Range Rovers

There's no in between with LR's, you either love them or hate them! :D

How can I tell which engine the RR 3.0 is? How do I know if it's the Ford or the BMW engine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭Quattroste

Actually you can ignore this. 2002 to 2005 3.0 Diesel engines were all the BMW engine.

From 2002 to 2006 it was a BMW M57 3.0l straight six. After that it was the 3.6l Jag/Ford/Peugeot V8. Under the bonnet it's obvious, otherwise the engine capacity will tell you.

Disco 3/4 and Range Rover sport will all be 2.7l Jag/Ford/Peugeot V6

from my experience the p38's are v troublesome and I wouldnt take a present of a RR sport. The amount of people who have had all types of trouble with them is worrying......faults being suspension, elecs and gearboxes. That 2.7 v6 is a good engine though.

For those that don't know, the P38 was the second generation Range Rover from 1996 (I think) to 2002 when the current L322 came out, you'll often see the project numbers used to identify the type.

The P38 as Bearcat says is regarded as a bit of lemon, introduced a lot of new technology at the changeover from BAe to BMW. Renowned for electrical problems and porous V8 blocks. Any left now are mostly sorted and you can get a lot for not a lot if you know what you are doing.

Without sounding like a pedant Sean, some, if not a lot, of new Disco 4s will have the new 3.0 LR diesel which seems to be a tasty bit of kit. It is only the base model Disco 4 that will retain the 2.7?

Yes, you are quite correct, I'd forgotten that the latest incarnation of the TdV6 is 3.0l
