Can anyone recommend a good book to explain speedwork, Menoscemo gave me a great lead on a marathon training book but I'm looking to speed up on the shorter distances before tackling Dublin again this year.

    Thanks in advance.:)

The Lore of Running by Tim Noakes

This book is effectively a running Bible. Very scientific but well worth a read once you have a bit of a basic understanding of running physiology.

Jack Daniels Running Formula by Jack Daniels

Has good plans worked out for various distances and gives somewhat an understand of the science behind the plans.

Healthy Intelligent Training by Ken Livingstone

An attempt to update the theories of Lydiard by applying more modern Scientific explanations into why his system works explaining the reasons behind the training principles. Defintely a good one.

Other than that letsrun have a good training info link which can be a good starting point:

    Road Racing for Serious Runners
I'm following the 5k plan now, will switch to the 10k plan next. All the VO2 max and Lactate Threshold info you'll ever need.

I can't recommend a book but I would recommend buying from www.bookdepositry.co.uk - I've gotten a few from there and I think they do the best prices and a quick delivery.

Absolutely agree here - first port of call before Amazon now (unless I'm going the ebook route). Better prices and FREE DELIVERY! Got my 'Lore of Running and Training' and 'Racing with a PM' the other day from them.

Anyway, Daniel's Running Formula and Lore of Running are both very good (but Lore of Running is a 1000 page textbook).

Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary FIRST Training Program (Runners World).
Got this book for Christmas and could not recommend it highly enough. Speed work, tempo runs - all explained. Training programmes for 5k through to marathons, based on your current 5km race pace. Easy to follow 12 week programme based on three runs a week. The three runs are a speed session, tempo run and long run.
I am currently on week one. Did the speed session Tuesday (8x400m) and tempo run tonight and not looking forward to it.

Why not?, the tempo run should be invigorating, no?

Invigorated, no - pleased that 5 mile tempo run is done though. The rational behind the three runs is that each run requires considerable effort. The tempo run tonight was one mile easy, 3 miles at short tempo pace and one mile cooldown. To be honest the reason I was not looking forward to the tempo run was because I had been doing tempo runs at a slower pace than the book recommends (10 sec) but I managed to stick to it so happy out. Great book!!

Have also read Run Less, Run Faster by Bill Pierce.

Used the training program for three months before xmas to improve my 5k time. Previously my 5k PB was 22.44. Had couple of go's at trying to improve this and was only making marginal gains.

After 3 months of following this plan, ran the Jingle Bells 5K and ran PB of 21.27. Knocked nearly 80 seconds off previous best. Would not have done this had i not being following the info in this book regarding Tempo's/Interval runs.

The workouts push you pretty hard. i picked up an injury partially due to the constant intensity that these workouts need. Have been carrying this injury for few weeks now and need to stop running for a while.

Performing the tempo/intervals will increase your speed but listen to what your body is telling you - if you feel an injury/niggle coming on, pull back a little.

Thank you for reply and great to hear you had such a positive result. Motivation to keep the tempo runs going! Well done and sorry to hear about the injury. Will certainly take your advise re listening to how you feel. Cheers.
