how to get 4 year old lexmark printer to accept a new cartridge

hi im having serious problems with my 4 year old lexmark printer.last one was refillled but kinda would print 1 day and wouldnt the next so i bought a new one and it wont print..is there anyway to fool the printer into accepting the new cartridge as i really need it to work..i heard putting sticky tape on it helps but…
