Turbo trainer Tyre

Started using a Tacx turbo trainer but I've noticed the rear wheel getting v hot and rubber melting, a friend suggested I move the tyre away from the trainer slightly but when I do this I find contact is lost occasionally. In short I'm wondering if it's worth it/ necessary to buy a Tacx turbo trainer tyre (about €30).

    Yes

It will work out much cheaper over the long term, as the turbo will wear out normal tyres much quicker than those designed to be used with turbos (and indeed much quicker than if used on the road)

FWIW I've been using the Tacx tyre ( blue one ) but I've noticed it still slips when suddenly upping the wattage, I've seen a few of the lads on the Tacx forum recommend the Continental version ( Orange ) and they claim it grips better than the Tacx so might be worth checking out.

I used to use a regular tyre on my Tacx, but kepts getting flats with it. Swapped to a trainier tyre and no problems since. My advice is to get one.
    Cheers

I have a continental version, its absolutely brilliant well worth the money if you do a lot of turbo work.It really never slips, cant comment on the tacx one.

I'd also heartily endorse the orange Continental trainer tyre.

I've used the continental orange mtb tyre for 2 yrs now and it's never slipped once, still plenty of life left in it too i think

recommend the continental orange one - don't know about anyone else but I had a hell of a time fitting it and thankfully got a spare wheel so don't have to keep taking it on and off ... maybe i'm just bad at fitting tyres tho ;)

I have same issue. Want to use turbo trainer whenever I want but don't want to have to change tyres constantly:mad:. I will invest in tacx/continental tyre alright, but can anyone suggest a cheap 700x23 wheel to put it on???

also, i realise back wheel will need a cassette on it, does it matter what type or make as long as it is ten speed which is what my bike is???

Any bike shop should be able to supply a cheap 700c 8/9/10s wheel and aprox. the €50 mark. You still need to factor in the price of a cassette, tyre and tube. The wheel will be cheap and cheerful, but its only going in the trainer, and will be doing comparatively less miles to your road wheels. If you are a campag user you will have to up your wheel budget, as cheap campag compatible wheels are hard come by.

I got a cheap back wheel, cassette, tire and tube for €80 in Humphries Cycle,Mckee Rd,Finglas.Little Sport Fairview and Cycleways wanted €80 just for back wheel and cassette.

Just reviving this thread to ask a question on turbo tyres . I have a Continental turbo tyre . I have only used my turbo perhaps 10 times or so . I now find however that theres a very " flat" section all around the crown of the tyre , and even in one spot I can see the underlying fibre starting to come through .
There's a constant smell of rubber burning when I use my turbo and there's always rubber dust particles on the floor when I complete my session . Now it's not as though I have the rear roller pressed too hard against the rear wheel , there's only minimal contact . I find myself in a position where (because of injury) I will have to use my turbo more often over the next few weeks . But I would have expected a longer life out of the tyre? I intend to purchase a replacement but am a bit iffy about another Continental tyre , would a Tacx one have a better lifespan?

In my experience with the Conti turbo tyre, it sheds a bit the first dozen or so times you use it. A sort of dirty orange dust like you describe. It should stop then however and shed no more.

Can anyone recommend what price I can expect to charge for a conti orange tyre & can you recommend the best value place to source one either in a store or online

    Thanks
