Is it possible to get a Landrover Defender and have it with Classic tax and insurance - If so what age would it have to be and has anyone an idea of how much the tax and Insurance would be? What qualifies a vehicle to fit into this category? If anyone has any experience with this and could let me know I would appreciate it.Thanks.ROSSKI

Classic tax won't be got on a 110 until 2013 when the first ones will be 30 years old, 90s not until 2014. at the moment classic road tax is €48 a year.

Some insurers may may give classic insurance on younger vehicles but I think you'll struggle to get it on a 90/110. You can't usually have it as your main vehicle on a classic policy either.

Thanks for the reply - so if i was to get an 81 defender i would be able to get the classic tax and Insurance on it(If so how do i go about it)? Also does that mean they are excempt from doe/nct.Thanks again.ROSSKI

If you got a series 3 it'd be much easier to have a classic taxed one. You could even upgrade it with more modern bits from defenders, and the defender front if you really wanted (series 3 has grill set back, defender is flat all the way across)

As far as I know you'll get Classic tax on any vehicle over 30 year old,but I think the Doe/Nct exemption is now changed to pre 1980 Vehicles only.:(

ROSSKI, by Defender do you mean a utility Land Rover, Defenders didn't exist in 1981, they were leaf sprung Series 3s then as Conrad says.

As a fanatic I always assume everyone knows the differences! :o

Even for coil sprung 90/110/127, the Defender name wasn't introduced until 1990 when the Disco came out.

So for current vintage tax and exemption from NCT/DOE you need a 1979 or earlier Series 3 Land Rover. 1980 Series 3s are tax exempt now but will always have to be tested.

Look on Donedeal and ebay, if anything comes up on Land Rover Addicts in the next few days I'll post a link.

Interesting, my DOE man has told me that I've only one more test, and then I'm finished (1981 109). Of course I will continue to get it tested anyway, as I think it's great value for access to such a thorough test.
