Buying from Cabelas

    Hi folks,
Every so often I see reference to Cabelas on this website, so having dropped my binos in the icy weather and broke them, I set about pricing a new pair. Cabelas seem to have a good selection however they do not export binoculars or scopes outside of the US.
I was wondering how others bought from them?
    Thanks for reading

I've bought from them, they are reliable and well priced, but you will get stung for import duty on anything coming from the States worth more than about €25. Cabelas send all their stuff in easily identifiable boxes, so the customs have no problem picking them out!

Got bino's from them in December, no issue with postage outside of USA.

TIP; choose the cheapest postage they offer, as the more expensive options do not work and you will end up in a world of pain cancelling and re-booking your order.

Some item's being sold by Cabela's are classed as "dual use" technology by the U.S. government and cannot be exported outside the U.s without a special liscence. This includes rifle scope's amongst other thing's , some retailers will not sell internationally due to the paper work involved and the possibility they may be breaking export laws by accident . If I remember correctly Cabela's have already been prosecuted for doing so . They were fined $680,000 for exporting scope's illegally to amongst other places Ireland ., so they may be being careful and have included any optical device such as binoculars .

Ring them and find out what the story is .They have a 1 800 number thats 24hours.More than likely it is the ITAR dual use problem..again!

I ordered Bino's and a rangefinder off them around 6 months ago, i didnt get stuck for tax either and the price was on the box, they arrived in around 6 days it was great. Ordered around €200 worth of clothes off them before the xmas holiday too and they arrived very fast and didnt get caught for import tax either, i think their a great crowd, their customer service is absolute cack when things go wrong but besides that their sweet!

I bought a lot of stuff from www.theopticzone.com without any problems.
Just got a zeiss scope from them about 2 months ago.
I think there are certain types of military scopes and reticules that they are not allowed to export.

Well it seems that something good can come from buying at home!
Was in Liffey Valley SC today and walked past the Fuji shop, saw a set of Fujinon 10x50 FMTR-SX on sale for 99 euro. RRP is 600 euro. They are BaK4 porro prisms and have a good review on any internet website that I've visited. Despite having a comfort strap they are a bit heavy for stalking at 1.4kg but a great deal. They have a 7x50 set remaining at the same price.

I buy most of my optics from opticsplanet and cabellas.
I have a brother that lives about 30mins from a huge Cabella store in Connecticut.
I find what I want on the internet, get it sent to his address or if hes in the area he'll go in and get it for me after I give him the product details.
He then reboxes it and sends on the guarantee paperwork separately.
So if you have anyone in the US willing to receive the goods for you then thats one way around it.
If not you'll find it hard to get them to send on optics from the states to Ireland although a guy working in opticsplanet told me that it is possible but they'll have to organise the proper paperwork for you but it can be done.
Go on to the opticsplanetwebsite and theres an option to have a live chat with a customer service rep, log on there and ask them what the procedures , they're very good to deal it and all your questions will be answered there and then.:D

Really dont get this stuff about the scopes and some other hardware.ITAR makes a fuss about exporting it out from the USA.Yet all the exact same stuff is available in the EU over the counter,[at a higher price of course],and with a bit of net surfing.

Two spring to mind are Eotech holo gunsights and Schmitt&Bender USMC tactical 3X12X50[?] rifle scope. Not availabe to be shipped from CONUS,blah, blah, blah.Yet freely for sale in Germany over the counter or to be orderd via a few websites??:confused:

To send a rifle scope from the US to Ireland the sender must first get an export licence.
If you get a friend or relative in the US to post it you run the risk of getting it
    confiscated by US customs.
No export licence is needed if you bring a scope back as part of your luggage.
