I'm curious if anyone knows if I am entitled to a tax refund or not.

I have recently emigrated from Ireland to Sweden. I paid income tax in Ireland for the 1st 5 months of last year. My income in Ireland stopped in May at which point I started work and get paid in Sweden. My tax in Ireland for those 5 months would have been based on my expected future earnings for 12 months. Since the 12 month period is now over and my Irish income is still at what it was after 5 months am I entitled to a refund on some of my income tax ?

    Thanks,
    Jaykay74

More than likely you will be. As the current tax system works, tax credits are assigned on the assumption that you will work a full tax year in Ireland. As such, they are divided on an even monthly basis. As you were entitled to full tax credits, but only used them for 5 months, you should be able to claim the rest of the tax you paid in that period, up to the personal allowance you have. Normally within the same tax year you would use the form P50 to do this. As you are making the application outside of the tax year, you need to fill in a form 12 (you can get this off the Revenue website). Print, fill it in, and post it in to Revenue (it's not normally possible to do this online). Wouldn't do any harm to include a letter explaining your circumstance either.
    Hope this helps!

You don't need a form 12. In fact don't confuse the poor revenue- ring your local district and ask for a p21 Balancing statement for the year- this will attribute your unused credits and trigger any refunds due. I'd also register a bank account as if you are out of the country a cheque issuing might not be the best idea

Great info Mr. Incognito. I have just done as you say and applied for the p21 balancing statement and updated with my bank account details. Thanks a lot :)

Hi guys I have a similar question- I recently emigrated to oz for the short term with about 8 friends.
As I thought i was also eligible for tax credits refund i filled out a P50 form. ONe major issue however was a question on the form about whether or not I would be working abroad. As i was working I called the tax office they said it didn't matter either way so i said I was and duly received some money back.

The plot thickened however with my girlfriend, she also said she was working etc but only received a very small amount back whereas other colleagues she works with received about 4 times as much, as I understand they said they were not working abroad.

Just wondering does this make a difference if anyone has been in a similar situation? I would have thought she would have been entitled to tax credit refund as i was regardless of work abroad or not?

I filled in a p21 online and got a refund directly into my bank account using revenue online. since its only Feb though i guess your tax would be correct for last year and you would only get tax back on this years tax paid. not sure if you have to wait until the end of the year to claim it.
