Taking a year out/going 'off books'

    Hey,

I looked around for a similar subject on this but couldn't find anything... basically I'm seriously considering taking a year out next year but have no idea how to go about doing it. The tcd website isn't much help really and I'd like to have a fairly strong idea about it before I email my course head about it. Experiences etc would be really helpful. :)

I'm in JS European Studies so I'd be taking it the year before SS which I don't think is really the best timing but right now I really feel like I need it to kind of... well, grow up before I have a degree in my hands.

So, if anyone knows what the basic procedure for taking a year out is, the help would be much appreciated!

Just go talk to the head of your department.. as long as you pass the year/get all the neccessary work done, going off books isn't really a problem. As far as I know, once you inform your department they'll let the Senior Lecturer know. I'm JS as well, and also thinking of taking a year off books, for the second time :D

EDIT: JS European Studies means you're on Erasmus, right? Email so! Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you can organise it last minute if you want, if you're back in time for May or whatever.

You should contact your tutor who will sort out the paperwork with you.

Hi, hope someone could help me on this

I'm also looking to go "off books" but unfortunately I've paid the first half of my fees in september (i presume there's no refunds in trinity!!),,I've applied to the dean of graduate studies through my course administrator in November but i'm still waiting for a decision,,
My course admin says there's no word yet!!!

Basically i'm wondering what the story is with Fees (which are now due in 2 weeks)

If all is successful and i get the deferral will I have to pay full fees again next year or just pay the second half in February!!

    Cheers in advance

Best and only way is to talk to your tutor. They are there to help you no matter what that help consists of (trinity related anyway!)

I'm currently in the process of going off books and starting 3rd year again next year. Once you're off books by the 31st of December, you only have to pay half-fees next year.

The whole process is a real pain though. My tutor's done everything he can. The admin side of things seems to be very slow!

Still waiting for official conformation on this despite being given the all-clear by my tutor!

Surely it shouldn't take this long? My tutor sent out the email last Monday! (17th).
