Hi- I am looking at replacing 100 year old sash windows in a red brick house. I am wondering what best practice is regarding the window frames- some fitters are telling me that they fit them inside the original frames, and others are telling me that the correct way to do it is to completely remove the frame including the old weights and fill the cavity with bricks before fitting the new window.

If we do the above, then this is going to be very disruptive so before proceeding I'd like to ensure its necessary as I am keen to ensure that they are completely airtight etc & appreciate any experience people might have on this
