Hey guys, 2 questions 1 thread, recessionary times and all that.

Part 1: anyone used the ski gear in Lidl, any good? Looked at it but felt a bit dubious about it. Picked up a spare base layer anyway but my ski pants are falling apart, and I can't say I wasn't tempted.

Part 2: going to Zakopane for a few days next week (going to be over that way for work anyway). Can't seem to find a proper snow report or webcam, anyone have any suggestions?

    Nice one

took a look at their ad for the snowboarding gear, not sure about the ski gear but if the waterproofing is anything along the lines of the snowboarding stuff unless you don't mind a wet ass all day I'd avoid. Men's snowboarding trousers are advertised at 1300mm and womens at 3000mm.

Ones I bought two years back in Vans (Newry outlet) are 10,000mm and are excellent. Although after a full on day on the slopes can even then feel a little wet (depending on how many falls I've had!). Was just looking for a backup pair but I'll pass on those, only thing they'd be good for is taking up room in your bag ;)

Are the Snowboard Jackets any good? I need to get to get a good ski jacket, I already have new pants.

I know people who have bought them and thought they were great. Esp the jackets. Don't have one myself, but the skipants in Aldi the other week looked great. I was really tempted, if I didn't have a few pairs already.

Nice one damoken, had thoguht as much myself but not having had my coffee this morning (when I was in there) I hadn't looked at the waterproofing. I'll see if I can't pick up something when I'm over in Poland so.

Tried on one of the jackets while I was there, aside from anything else, it certainly wasn't the warmest thing in the world. You wouldn't want to get stuck in a blizzard in it or anything. If it's a good jacket you want, I'd say you'll be paying a wee bit more than €30.

Have you tried TK Maxx? I know they have a lot of Trespass stuff for around €50-60 mark. There was an Armadillo jacket in the sale section in Sligo for €37 last week.

Was in the TKmaxx in Cork the other day and all they had ski-wise was either XXL or S. Well they had that and massive ques for the check out...

I've a full set of Lidl gear and the girlfriend has the same from Aldi (both similar quality). Its great for a first time set, especially if you don't know whether you'll go again. If you're going more than once, I would stay clear, the waterproofing is not great. If you really want to get some of the gear, only go for the jacket, as the pants will leave you with a wet ass if you're a boarder (sitting down a lot).

My jacket is starting to come away at the seems too. My advice would be to head to the Kildare outlet store or else TK Maxx, I picked up a great pair of pants for 60€ and jacket for 80€. It is much better value than Lidl/Aldi.

I would stay away from their gloves and goggles too, not very good quality, and again for a little more you'll pick up a decent set at TK Maxx.

The socks are grand quality, not as soft as the high performance ones you can get in great outdoors, but very good value, and they do me fine.

The snowboards are grand for a beginner too, for 50€ you can't beat it. It is a stiff board with no pop, that doesn't respond that quickly (not sure how they managed to get all that in one board). I use it as a backup board for the Dublin mountains when we get snow.

Ah bugger, I picked up a pair of the gloves. Figured for €5 or whatever it was I could use em while my 'real' pair are drying out or whatever. Ah well.

But back to part two of the original post, anyone have any info/websites for skiing Zakopane?

Just on the lidl gear. I have the jacket and pants that they are currently selling, the brown check pants and the jacket. I used them last year and found them excellent, just as good as the more expensive stuff i borrowed from a friend of mine the year before.

If anyone is looking for cheap ski gear today in TK max cork they had a good few jackets in stock in many sizes. I got a really nice white one for 70euro.

The only reason i bought this new jacket is because i have this year decided to buy body armour as i plan on hitting the parks and with the armour i needed a bigger jacket.

As a result i can offer my lidl jacket and pants to anyone who wants them for 25euro. There both M and in perfect condition. Im in cork. PM with any questions:)

Just as a further point to Question 1 above, TK Maxx reduced quite a lot of their goggles, base layers & gloves last Thurs in the ladies section... My guess is they'll be doing the same in the ski gear section in general over the next few weeks, especially as they're putting the bikinis out on sale!!!:O

the problem is getting your size. they go so quickly.
I have a friend who has a lidl jacket for years.
but jackets at 40 euro and salopettes round 25 are very good value especially if it is your first and maybe only time going

    http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Zakopane/conditions

I presume this is the same place, temperatures are looking fairly mild.

yeah i looked at that forecast already but since half the details aren't even filled in for there (like when it last snowed etc.) I wasn't really placing too much faith in it.

    Nice one though.

If you are skiing for the first time and are not sure whether you will go again then I would buy the Lidl ski gear.
I have been skiing for years and my first set of gear was from Lidl If it is very cold this ski gear will not keep you warm - I am just back from a ski holiday and brought a ski jacket I purchased from Lidl a few years ago with me(long story!!) it bucketed with rain yesterday and I was soaked to the skin. Daughter had a Trespass Jacket on and she was a dry as a bone - so I think that says it all.
I would avoid it go to TK Maxx and get some gear there - Great Outdoors also have a sale - I have not been in so dont know what they have

I went to Zakopane a few years ago- myself and my wife traveled down on spec while staying in Krakow (we heard Pope John Paul skied there) to do some snowboarding.
The slopes we found were a bit poor - Each are owned privately and you need a separate ticket for each- Go down one and don't fancy it and you are stuck with 9 more goes! There is supposedly some really good off-piste runs and we could see them opposite from where we were- they looked like we should have lots of experience and protective gear, so we opted to avoid them

We rented our boards - was ancient and maybe even dangerous-
Overall though we had a good time there - aprés ski is good.
So 2 things to take from it- 1, It suits either beginners or Highly experienced and 2, Bring your own gear!
Lastly note: the stuff they leave at your table that looks like a nice spread for your bread when waiting for your meal- It ain't butter or olive oil with little bits of ham- Its Sheep's Lard- A few mouthfuls of that will be repeating on you for the week :P

Just a little FYI for anyone interested: TK Maxx reduced their ski gear on Wednesday...

Anyone kniw what the helmets in aldi are like? Theyre 20 euro or something so might pick one up

    Hey fibber,

Literally just in the door from Poland. Reading your message just now. Some though not all seems to have changed.
Each are owned privately and you need a separate ticket for each
Runs still all owned privately but you can get your money back for any amount of the card you don't use. So you buy 9 runs, only use 5 you get the money for the 4 back.

The gear we rented as all very new looking (we might just have got lucky there, the shop looked new enough) and cheap as chips.

The off piste was either non existent or waaaaaaay beyond my level; went for a hike one day and saw some guys going down the other side of the valley, looked completely insane.

We were only there for like 4 days or something and we were only just gettin the hang of the bus system over there, but the way all the pistes were spread out was a little annoying.
Lastly note: the stuff they leave at your table that looks like a nice spread for your bread when waiting for your meal- It ain't butter or olive oil with little bits of ham- Its Sheep's Lard- A few mouthfuls of that will be repeating on you for the week
I was wondering what it was, I was afraid thats what it might be, but damn it it was just so tasty with bread and Goulash.
