Banned from PI...

Hard to know what to make of what happened here... My own view is that this standard of moderation on any discussion site is only doing one thing and that is generate badwill towards this site and completely p*ss off users that this site should be grateful to users for, for using the site and making decent contributions....

    (1) Another poster tells me I'm making, "bulsh*tty excuses" for the person who is the subject of the particular thread, this gets tolerated on what is claimed to be a "heavily moderated forum"...

    (2) I attempt correct this analysis of my post and say that I'm not going to continue with the discussion, as I don't feel that the person who is abusing my contribution, has the same depth/grasp of the subject that I have, insofar as all human behaviour has a cause/reason, and that this is a different thing from creating "bullsh*tty excuses" for any persons behaviour. I happen to be specifically qualified in this area in the academic sense and I'm not attempting to hurt anyone by stating that I find the discussion falling below a standard which I am not really interested in continuing with...

That's where I leave it last night and I log in today to see an infraction AND ban in my inbox.

I enquire as to why this is so, I am told by way of a reply that I ignored several PM's to me and warnings to me specifically on thread, with regard to my posts.

A review of all mails in my inbox then revealed that I had never been PM'd any warning, infraction or otherwise cautioned regarding any post ever in this forum.

This was made clear to the mod who was then clearly in the wrong, who then corrected herself and apologised, but would not revisit her decision.

Then the basis for the ban shifted to having been warned on thead.

A review of all posts on the thead, showed that I had not been warned on thead in relation to any post.

This was brought to the attention of the mod in question who then tried to make out that there were "general warnings" issued on thread. I believe the point is valid that people do not post in a general capacity, they post in a personal capacity, this lazy type of moderation is not moderation at all, it is just confusing people. In any event, any warnings that were issued on the thread were directed at specific posters and as I was not the poster in question, I had to reason to believe that any warning issued pertained to me.

The long and the short of it is that one posted gets to say to me that I'm making "bullsh*tty excuses" in relation to the subject of the thead, I then try to keep the thead at a level of intelligent discussion that I'm used to.

It is infuriating to be making adult and life based contributions on this site and getting banned, not because someone else is abusing your contributions, but because a mod is clearly bringing favouritism into the role of moderating.

It smacks of favouritism on the part of the mod, who is clearly failing to act against someone who is abusing another user on thread, and then banning someone who tries to defend themselves from said abuse, and it completely turns me off using this site.

Anyway, I won't be posting in PI again because it is obvious enough to me that mod training and proper selection of people who are capable of providing fair moderation is very sadly lacking on this site and in particular in PI, here's a case of a mod banning someone, and she doesn't even know if she PM'd or warned who she is banning, tries to claim she did, was then proven wrong as a matter of record, had to eat her own words and obviously too immature to realise she was completely in the wrong in the first place. The strategy here is obviously, "ban first, ask questions later"...

I'm all for decent moderation and if I had have been infracted for this, I'd have still scratched my head on that but I'd be inclined to accept it. However banning someone on this basis without any warning whatsoever, is just going to completely p*ss them off. I'm a decent poster on this site and if something I post is considered wrong, a warning is the most it will take to resolve the issue at my end.

Anyway, absolute shame on boards.ie for allowing genuine decent posters who do not troll or cause problems for the site, to be treated in this way by what are representatives of boards.ie...

    Hi HellFireClub,

I'll be looking into this. A link to the threads/posts in question would be helpful.

    Hi HellFireClub,

I had a look at this shortly after my first post, but haven't responded because I wasn't sure whether you were still pursuing this, and because my answer is to uphold the mod's actions in this case.

I read the thread in question, and entirely disagree with your analysis.

Mod warnings are often given in general rather than specifically naming a poster. If I say on a thread "enough fighting, people", you can assume that the next person fighting will get a ban, even though they haven't been specifically named.

The mod in question accepts that they were mistaken to say they had PMs from you, but it doesn't change the picture.

See first point - you don't perceive yourself as having been in any way argumentative or derogatory to other posters, and I (and the mod) disagree.

    moderately,
