Get the silly injuries out of the way now. Better to get bitten this year.

The poor girl is a gluten for punishment. Half her book is about stupid injuries and illnesses that she has had.

I hope this doesn't sound too corny, but Paula is one of my favourite athletes. She must know that her chances in 2012 are barley there though anyway, whatever about setbacks like this.

Maybe she took it all with a rye smile, or maybe she shouted out some unprintable oats, but hopefully she'll be well soon.

Sorry for going against the grain of the thread.

I think she has missed her chance at the Olympics already but she will have the records for a while yet. Although the last Olympic winner was getting on a bit wasn't she?

Indeed, Tomescu was 38 when she won in 2008. Paula will be the same age in 2012. With the long breaks she's had I wouldn't entirely rule her out.

    Do I detect a hint of ageism?

.....Anyway Carlos Lopes was 37 when he won the 1986 Olympic Marathon......ahead of ...???... oh yeah! John Treacy. :)

Sorry can't resist. It was 1984, not 1986.

    'tis nothing new.

Jerry Kiernan was a teacher in my primary school back in the 80's.

His second biggest claim to fame to us all (after coming 8th or 9th in the 1984 Olympic marathon of course) was getting bitten in the lad by a dog while out running.

That particular dog was on a lead.....apparently about a 20 metre lead!
