Why does my PC start when it's plugged in instead of needing the 'on switch' to be pressed? How can this be fixed. Will this harm the computer?

when you shut it down does it automatically start again?

I think this is a setting on the BIOS. Something like "On AC Power Loss" or "AC Power Loss Restore State". On some motherboards this is set to "Turn on" or "Restore state". If you want to disable it, go into the BIOS menu and navigate until you find the option, then set it to stay off.

Leaving it on shouldn't hurt your computer, but if you don't need it then you don't need it and might as well disable it. It does mean that if the computer's plugged in, and there's a power cut, then the computer will boot up again when the power comes back on. :)

Nope. It's handy enough that it starts as soon as it's plugged in but will this damage the motherboard?

I don't know for certain, but I'd doubt that it'd hurt it.
