Differences between Gibson Les Pauls?

    Hi there,

Quick question here. Can someone tell me what the difference between the LP Standard, Studio and Custom models are? I've googled and found this les paul buyers guide: http://www.lespaulguide.com/les-paul-buyers-guide.php

The differences mentioned there, however, seem minimal considering some of the price differences. For example, I was looking on thomann and found this http://www.thomann.de/ie/gibson_lp_studio_50s_tribute_p90_eb.htm and I was amazed that it was only €766 compared to this, for example http://www.thomann.de/ie/gibson_lpcstbk.htm which is a whopping €2550

Now, I notice that the cheaper one has a rosewood fingerboard and the more expensive one has an ebony fingerboard. The cheaper one has P90s (which I actually love) and the more expensive one has different pickups.

Asides from that, the other differences listed are aesthetic ones (mother of pearl inlays, gold hardware).

Surely the differences listed there can't justify such huge price differences? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Les Pauls but can anyone enlighten me? Would they sound much difference and do you think the cheaper LP Studio is worth getting?

    Cheers

    I think.......

Studio has slightly thinner body no binding 490r 498t pups standard used to have same pups until around last year I think they use burstbuckers.

Custom has ebony fretboard standard rosewood
Different inlay on headstock fancier on costom
Binding on headstock of custom none on standard
    Gold hardware on custom

Not sure what pups are in custom but I'm nearly certain they are the main differences

Oh and the custom has an inlay on the first fret

I'm with eagle10, most of the difference is in the finish, particularly between the standard and custom. Mostly you are paying for hand finishing the finer details, and the customs really are works of art.

There are bigger differences between the studio and standard/customs. The studio has none of the hand finishing really and has a thinner body which makes it lighter and changes the sound.

I suppose play a studio and then a standard and you'll understand better.

Then of course there are loads of different variations in all of them, pickups, colours etc etc etc.

I prefer the standards myself but its a personal thing, the studios I have always found a spot light for a les paul, and I'd be almost afraid to carry a custom around due to the cost!
