I was arriving into Dublin Airport this evening on an ex-Lufthansa A319 (still got Lufthansa interiors) with bmi, when I noticed two aircraft - a Lufthansa A320 and a Delta B767 both parked over on the apron in front of the control tower - are they in for maintenance or were they casualties?

    It is unusual because????

    lxflyer,

    Ignore the above.

    You are completely correct.

It's unusual because neither bases an aircraft in Dublin for any duration longer than a turnaround.

You can almost certainly rule out any sort of scheduled maintenance.

Usually if a non based carrier has an aircraft go tech, it will be towed off an active stand to a remote parking spot, usually on the West Apron as in this case, while it awaits an engineering solution.

    Rudeness at its best

Maybe the OP asked as he/she has never seen aircraft (or non-irish airlines anyway) parked over on the apron in front of the control tower before and is just curious to know why?

That is exactly why I asked - This was at 1710, today Sunday - when neither LH or DL are scheduled to have aircraft in Dublin, and the aircraft in question were on the west apron locked up!

I'm a frequent user of Dublin Airport and I have a fair idea of non-EI/FR movements and their times, hence I think that's a fair reason for the question?

Far from it, as it was also news to me but in a different way, I wouldnt think twice about seeing any of the Op's mentioned Aircraft in Dublin, they may have been just parked up there.

Anybody who knows Dublin Airport knows that this is unusual in (1) where the aircraft are parked and (2) neither of the two airlines schedule an aircraft in Dublin for an overnighter.

    Perhaps:

They wouldn't have just been parked in that location. Sounds like a tech issue might have grounded them.

To be fair, LH do overnight an aircraft in Dublin, but not until2250.

Why not? Is that not the New Apron, im sure they could have been placed there for a myriad of Reasons.

Perhaps a tech issue is the reason but in all fairness the Aircraft(s) could have landed and offloaded their Passengers/Cargo/Luggage then had any number of reasons to have their Aircraft moved away from the Gate and placed on the Apron.

I see this as a non issue of somebody simply putting those Aircraft in a position to park them up for whatever reason out of the way of other active aircraft/airfield Operations.

    OP, Welcome to A&A.

    OP, Welcome to A&A.

Thank you for the welcome, but if you read my post again you would see the reason for my question! I made the point that neither airline had any scheduled movements at that time - I was only asking out of curiosity.

Thank you tipppilot for at least spotting what I was getting at.

What you are saying would be true of Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Arann, Cityjet aircraft, ie. airlines with permanently based aircraft in Dublin. It would also be true of aircraft operating charters or freight aircraft.

In the case of Delta and LH, neither companies aircraft are scheduled to be on the ground long enough for it to be viable to move them off stand.

It would be highly unusual to see them parked away from a boarding gate. Seeing them parked up on the West Apron implies some issue prevented them from operating.

It's just that there would be no day to day operational reason for them to be there, especially given the time frame alluded to by the OP.

The DL flight to Atlanta was cancelled this morning(DL177 i think),as is tomorrows flight. Assuming there's a tech issue with the aircraft.

Hi, first post, but a long time follower of Aviation & Aircraft.

I believe the Lufthansa plane is awaiting repairs. I was due to fly out from Dub to Frankfurt yesterday morning at 650, but as we taxied to take off, the steering on the nosewheel failed. After being towed back to the gate and trying to fix the problem there, it was announced that parts and engineers would have to be flown in from Frankfurt. The flight was then officially marked as delayed until 1830. I ended up being accommodated on the 1220 flight, so I have no more information. Maybe this helps?

Think I read on airliners.net that the Delta flight was cancelled because of snow in Atlanta.

Thanks again - I knew that something was up when I saw them parked where they were!

Just seen that this morning. That'll teach me for assuming tech problems!:o

By the way, the A319 that you flew on (G-DBCA) has never been with any airline other than bmi. However bmi do operate scheduled services on behalf of Lufthansa, so maybe that is why it has the interior you describe.
